Lumina Foundation Announces $2.4 Million in Grants
The Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation for Education has announced first-quarter grants of $2.4 million to twelve organizations working to increase college access and academic success for disadvantaged students.
The grants include $324,200 to the Colorado Community College System Foundation in Denver to institutionalize strategies designed to increase retention of academically underprepared students at community colleges in the state; and $748,500 to Indiana University to improve the academic success of African-American males at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Indiana University Northwest, and Indiana State University. In addition, the foundation awarded $70,000 to the D.C.-based Council on Foundations for a forum on grantmaking research and practices that will encourage greater communication and collaboration between research centers and grantmakers.
"America is slipping in global standing for degree attainment, and we must work to find solutions that can reverse this trend," said Lumina Foundation president and CEO Martha D. Lamkin. "We need to enhance college access and success for disadvantaged students as a means to ensure the future competitiveness of the United States. Through grants and initiatives funded by Lumina, the foundation can identify strategies, programs, and long-term successes to respond to that need."
