MetLife Foundation Announces Awards for Alzheimer's Research
The MetLife Foundation in New York City has announced the winners of the MetLife Foundation Awards for Medical Research in Alzheimer's Disease.
The foundation recognized Dr. David M. Holtzman of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis for his pioneering work in examining the molecular biology of early-stage Alzheimer's, and Dr. Berislav V. Zlokovic of the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York, for his research defining the impact that blood flow plays in the disease. The awards program supports basic research, with an emphasis on providing scientists with the opportunity to pursue ideas in depth. Each honoree will receive a personal award of $50,000, in addition to a $200,000 award to his institution to support further research.
In the United States, an estimated 4.5 million people suffer from Alzheimer's, a figure that has more than doubled since 1980. "The scientists we honor [with these awards] are making a significant contribution to our future by helping us better understand a disease that has an impact on so many Americans," said MetLife Foundation president Sibyl Jacobson. "Their hard work and dedication give us hope for the future."
