David Rockefeller Announces $225 Million Bequest to Rockefeller Brothers Fund
The New York City-based Rockefeller Brothers Fund has announced that David Rockefeller, the youngest son of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and one of its founders, will make a $225 million bequest to the fund to create the David Rockefeller Global Development Fund.
The largest gift in the fund's history will be used to expand RBF's capacity to address poverty, health care, sustainable development, management of the global economy, international trade, and the multilateral system, as well as plan for farsighted, collaborative, and constructive U.S. foreign policies in the global arena. The Global Development Fund will be managed within the RBF's general endowment. "The world's most urgent problems — poverty, health, and development — can only be solved with a combination of resources, both public and private," said Rockefeller. "In thinking about how I, personally, might make an impact, it seemed especially fitting to establish a special fund at the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, which does such excellent work around the world and with which my family and I have been so closely associated."
During his lifetime, Rockefeller and RBF will undertake cooperative projects to help build a more just, sustainable, and peaceful world. As a pilot project for the Global Development Fund, they are jointly sponsoring a project on global warming and will contribute to the New York City Partnership Foundation in support of a 2007 climate change meeting.
"David Rockefeller's extraordinarily generous gift to the Rockefeller Brothers Fund reflects a lifetime devoted to philanthropy and his ongoing leadership as both a citizen and diplomat in improving global conditions," said RBF president Stephen Heintz. "Our history, our work, and our values reflect the traditions of the Rockefeller family, and we are pleased that David's gift builds on the philanthropic legacy of his father, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who provided the lead gifts to the RBF endowment."
