Kellogg Foundation Awards $8.7 Million for School-Based Health Centers in New Orleans
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek, Michigan, has awarded $8.7 million to the New Orleans-based Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI) to support its new School Health Connection program, Louisiana Weekly reports.
The program will help plan the rebuilding and construction of school-based health centers in New Orleans public schools that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The centers, in turn, will provide greater access to primary and preventive-care services to students, including those that are uninsured, underinsured, or who may not have access to other healthcare facilities or care. By January 2007, new or renovated centers will be up and running at McDonogh 35 High School, McMain High School, New Orleans Math and Science Charter School, and Riverdale High School in Jefferson Parish, and will be providing services for as many as 3,500 students by the end of the year.
"The grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation demonstrates their commitment to New Orleans' recovery and helps ensure that the healthcare needs of New Orleans' most vulnerable populations will be met while the city rebuilds," said School Health Connection director Marsha Broussard. "School Health Connection is working together with community leaders and health policy makers to address the challenge of funding School Based Health Centers for future generations."
