American Express Pledges $10 Million for WTC Memorial Foundation
The World Trade Center Memorial Foundation has announced a $10 million pledge from American Express toward construction of the WTC memorial and memorial museum.
The announcement came soon after New York City mayor Michael R. Bloomberg was approved as chairman of the foundation, despite strong opposition from several relatives of those killed in the 9/11 attacks. Including the commitment from American Express, the foundation has raised almost $145 million from nearly 26,000 donors for construction and planning of the memorial and museum.
Following the 9/11 attacks, American Express not only recommitted its headquarters to Lower Manhattan but also supported numerous efforts designed to help revitalize the neighborhood, Bloomberg noted. "I am grateful," he added, "that they have shown such tremendous commitment again by pledging a significant contribution to help ensure a lasting memorial and museum at the World Trade Center site."
