NFL Supports Ongoing Relief Efforts in Indonesia, Sri Lanka
The Friends of the World Food Program in Washington, D.C., has announced a $500,000 gift from the National Football League to provide food for people in areas still affected by the earthquake and tsunami that struck the Indian Ocean region in December 2004.
In 2004, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) responded to the disaster with one of the largest and most complex emergency operations in its history, and its large-scale relief operations in Indonesia and Sri Lanka will continue through 2007, focusing on children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly, and the disabled. Today WFP provides food aid to nearly 1 million people, and its school feeding programs serve enriched meals to more than 400,000 children.
"[The NFL's] contribution comes at an especially critical time, when most of the world's attention has shifted from the tsunami-torn region to other stories that make the news," said Friends of WFP president Karen Sendelback. "We hope this gift will help call attention to ongoing food aid and rebuilding efforts in the region and motivate others to give."
