Doris Duke Foundation Awards $10 Million for State Wildlife Action Plans
The New York City-based Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has announced two grants totaling more than $10 million to broaden support for state wildlife action plans.
The larger of the two grants — $7.5 million awarded over three years to the Conservation Fund in partnership with the Nature Conservancy — will be focused on the states of North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. Roughly $6 million of that is earmarked for the protection of lands identified as high priorities in the wildlife action plans of the four states, while the remaining funds will be designated for educational efforts and the building of strategic partnerships.
The second grant — $2.6 million over three years to the Wildlife Conservation Society — will support the creation of an Opportunities Fund, a re-granting mechanism designed to fund projects that accelerate the implementation of state wildlife action plans across the country by establishing new public-private partnerships and coordinating conservation efforts among the many organizations and agencies that contribute to conservation efforts.
"The wildlife action plans created last year by every state offer new hope for all concerned about the conservation of wildlife and the protection of open space in America," said DDCF president Joan E. Spero. "The goal of these grants is to help turn good state plans into a series of specific actions that measurably benefit our nation's wildlife."
