Barnes Foundation Extends Campaign After Reaching Goal

Barnes Foundation Raises Campaign Total After Reaching $150 Million Goal

A day after announcing the completion of a $150 million fundraising campaign to relocate its world-renowned art collection to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, the Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania, has announced that it has set a new campaign goal of $200 million.

Sixty-five donors from the area — including corporations, foundations, and private citizens — pledged their support for the move, which will make the works of arts more accessible to the public. Donors contributing $10 million or more to the campaign are the Annenberg Foundation ($30 million), the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania ($25 million), the Pew Charitable Trusts ($20 million), the Lenfest Foundation ($15 million), the Neubauer Family Foundation ($10 million), the William Penn Foundation ($10 million), and the City of Philadelphia (land donation).

The additional $50 million will bolster the Barnes' endowment and go toward educational programs. "The tremendous outpouring of support we have received within our own community has encouraged us to carry forward the momentum," Dr. Bernard C. Watson, chairman of the Barnes Foundation, told the Philadelphia Business Journal. "We believe this is the best way to express our gratitude toward the donors who have brought us this far — by building on the success they have helped us achieve."
