Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Receives $100 Million Gift

Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Receives $100 Million Gift

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City has announced a $100 million gift from publishing magnate and real estate developer Mortimer B. Zuckerman in support of its new cancer research facility, which is scheduled to open later this month.

Made through Zuckerman's charitable trust, the gift is the largest single commitment by an individual in the center's history. When completed, the 23-story, 693,000-square-foot complex — to be named the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Research Center — will almost double the size of Sloan-Kettering's research facilities and will house the recently established Human Oncology and Pathogenesis program, a hospital-based initiative in which scientists and physicians work together to translate laboratory findings into clinical investigations with a direct impact on patient care.

First elected to Sloan-Kettering's board of overseers in 1991, Zuckerman is chairman and editor-in-chief of U.S. News and World Report, publisher of the New York Daily News, and founder of Boston Properties, Inc.

"The Mortimer B. Zuckerman Research Center gives vivid physical expression to this institution's role as a leader in cancer research," said Sloan-Kettering president Harold Varmus. "The configuration of its laboratories and other spaces will encourage interactions that are critical to productive collaborations among basic scientists and clinical investigators. We are fortunate to have someone like Mort who recognizes the essential connection between scientific discoveries and advances in patient care."
