W.T. Grant Foundation Awards $2.2 Million for Research
The New York City-based William T. Grant Foundation has announced more than $2.2 million in grants, including $750,000 to Public/Private Ventures (PPV) in Philadelphia to support an after-school program study.
The PPV grant will fund a study of its Higher Achievement program, which provides students in fifth- through eighth-grade with intensive academic activities during the school year and over the summer and prepares them for top high school programs. Using a lottery system, the study will randomly assign more than a thousand youths to either Higher Achievement or another after-school program. Researchers will then compare the academic attitudes, performance, and behavior of the two groups using standardized tests, student and teachers surveys, and observations.
In addition, the foundation awarded research grants to the National Academy of Sciences ($350,019), the Society for Research in Child Development ($374,073), the University of Chicago ($250,000), the Urban Institute ($21,500), Columbia University ($25,000), the Forum for Youth Investment ($250,000), and the Afterschool Alliance ($200,000).
