New York Grantmakers Contributed 13 Percent of Tsunami Donations
New York-area grantmakers contributed more than $240 million, or 13 percent of all private U.S. donations, to the recovery and rebuilding effort mounted in response to last year's devastating Indian Ocean tsunami, a new report from the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers finds.
The report, Rebuilding Lives: The Philanthropic Response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004, lists contributions by 42 of NYRAG's 270 members most of them to the
American Red Cross to provide immediate relief in areas devastated by the tsunami. The report also chronicles how members' cash contributions are aiding in the rebuilding effort and highlights preferred practices for private and corporate foundations when they fund programs in the wake of massive disasters and humanitarian crises.
"With greater pressure on philanthropies to meet societal needs in the face of massive disaster, we determined that grantmakers and policy makers could benefit from a report on the best approaches to disaster relief and recovery," said NYRAG president Michael Seltzer. "Rebuilding Lives examines how grantmakers are maintaining their core missions while addressing immediate and ongoing recovery within a decimated area."
