New Englanders Are Most Likely to Give, Study Finds
New Englanders Very Committed to Charity, Study Finds
New Englanders not only participate more frequently in charitable giving than other Americans, but they also give to secular causes at significantly higher levels, a new study commissioned by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University finds.
A Closer Look at New England Giving found that 82 percent of New England households gave to a charitable cause, either secular or religious, in 2002, compared to 67 percent of households nationally. In addition, New Englanders who donated to secular causes gave a higher amount (an average of $1,190) than donors to secular causes nationally (an average of $863), while New England donors to religious causes gave much less (an average of $918) than donors to religious causes nationally (an average of $1,743).
Funded by Associated Grant Makers, the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy, the Maine Philanthropy Center, the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, the Rhode Island Foundation, and the Vermont Community Foundation, the study is based on national survey data that was re-analyzed by region, while the data set on religious and secular giving was drawn from the Center on Philanthropy Panel Study, a recently added component of the forty-year-old Panel Study of Income Dynamics.
"[The report] affirms what we in the philanthropic community have long known New Englanders are active givers and care deeply about their communities," said Ron Ancrum, president of Boston-based Associated Grant Makers. "The incredibly wide participation…really speaks to how ingrained giving is in our culture."
