Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Announces Long-Term Recovery Grants for Gulf Coast

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Focuses on Long-Term Recovery in Gulf Coast

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has announced a three-year, $10 million commitment to long-term recovery needs in areas of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas devastated by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

In the days after Hurricane Katrina slammed into Mississippi and Louisiana, RWJF awarded grants totaling $1.5 million to support the relief efforts of the American Red Cross and Salvation Army, as well as $1 million to the Centers for Disease Control Foundation in support of its efforts to respond to public health needs in the region. Subsequently, the foundation shifted its focus from relief to near-term recovery, supporting the work of groups that performed assessments of the mental health, primary care needs, and substance abuse services in affected communities. The foundation also made grants to faith-based organizations in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas, and supported a matching-grant fund to help restore the network that coordinates and delivers supportive home- and community-based services to seniors and their caregivers in affected communities.

With this new round of grants, the Princeton, New Jersey-based foundation's efforts will focus on services for vulnerable populations, with a special focus on mental health and substance-abuse services; public health infrastructure; the recovery of damaged or destroyed health records through a partnership with federal, state, and local governments and private and philanthropic organizations; and rebuilding activities that promote healthier communities.

"As our hearts and our hands continue to go out to those so deeply affected by the storms of August and September," said foundation president and CEO Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, "we are looking forward to the months and years ahead to when we can say that Katrina represented a true sea-change that caused us to transform a region, and the nation, for the better."
