Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Announces Program to Improve State Health Agencies
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, in partnership with the National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) and the Public Health Leadership Society, has announced the launch of a program to augment the capacity of state public health agencies to protect and improve the health of the people in the communities they serve.
Public health agencies in Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, and Washington were selected from a field of eighteen applicants to take part in the Multi-State Learning Collaborative, which is designed to enhance efforts to use performance standards in reviewing health agencies' work. Each health agency will be awarded a grant of up to $150,000 to cover the costs of technical assistance, sharing information, publications, meetings, and evaluation, as well as to develop a fund to sustain the effort. The five state projects are expected to produce replicable models for health agencies nationwide.
Noting the volume and quality of the "highly competitive and well-conceived applications," NNPHI program director Joseph Kimbrell further noted that, "the substantial response indicates the broad-based commitment to improving public health departments and systems throughout the country."
