Former Presidents Establish Katrina Relief Fund
Former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton have announced the establishment of a new fund to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina, Reuters reports.
According to the two former presidents, the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund will support disaster relief efforts in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, with the governor in each state deciding how best to use money raised through the fund. The Wal-Mart retail chain and the Walton Family Foundation have already announced contributions totaling $23 million to the fund, which has also received contributions from Microsoft, Nike, and Entergy Corp, a regional utility company.
"Recovery is going to take years. We need to help these Gulf Coast communities and, of course, the great city of New Orleans get back on their feet," former President Bush said at a news conference to announce the fund. "The job is too big, too overwhelming for any one group."
In addition, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) said Congress would take up the issue of long-term financial help for the devastated Gulf Coast region as soon as it returned from its recess on Tuesday, but declined to say whether tax increases would be an appropriate response.
