Freeman Foundation Awards $1.75 Million to Support Education Sector in Tsunami-Affected Region

The Freeman Foundation in Stowe, Vermont, has awarded a $1.75 million grant to the New York City-based Institute of International Education (IIE) to support efforts to rebuild educational resources in tsunami-affected areas of Thailand and Aceh Province, Indonesia.

In Thailand, IIE/Southeast Asia will work with the Rajaprajanugroh Foundation and Somdet Phra Thep's Charity Fund to rebuild schools and provide educational services to displaced students. In Aceh, the Indonesian International Education Foundation, IIE's partner organization, will work with the Sampoerna Foundation to rebuild schools that were destroyed by the tsunami and to prepare high school students for the national university entrance examination.

"Along with the rest of the world, the Freeman Foundation and its trustees have been immensely shocked and distressed at the havoc and loss of life ... [that] have resulted from this tsunami," said foundation chairman Houghton Freeman. "As the Freeman Foundation's main mission is in the educational field, we feel it most appropriate that we do what we can to help alleviate some of the problems created in Southeast Thailand and in Aceh's educational sector by this terrible act of nature."
