Give2Asia Announces $2 Million in Grants to Support Post-Tsunami Recovery Efforts

San Francisco-based Give2Asia has announced grants totaling more than $2 million through its Tsunami Recovery Fund to local nonprofit and faith-based organizations that are providing essential recovery services in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

More than thirty health, education, economic, environmental, and social service organizations identified by local staff and advisers in the affected countries have received funding. Give2Asia created the fund to address the urgent and long-term rebuilding needs in areas that were devastated by the December 26, 2004, disaster. Since December, as many as one thousand individual, foundation, and corporate donors have contributed more than $3.5 million to the fund. The balance of the fund, which continues to grow, will be distributed in the coming months.

"With the support of our donors, Give2Asia is bringing essential services to the coastal areas that were most severely damaged," said Give2Asia managing director Mike Rea. "Even before the tsunami, some of these regions were affected by chronic poverty and political conflicts, and we are hopeful that this rebuilding will provide new opportunities for reconciliation and prosperity."
