Roots of Peace - Development Director

Position Summary: Roots of Peace (“ROP”) seeks an experienced and resourceful development professional to lead our expansion efforts. Under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer, the Development Director will develop and implement a five-year fundraising plan to raise $5M+ in program and unrestricted funds. The successful candidate will actively engage with the Executive Team that sets and implements programs and policies for ROP.

The Development Director will be responsible for refining and implementing the fundraising strategy for ROP. Reporting to the COO and in partnership with the CEO and Executive Director, the Development Director will work to diversify and significantly grow the organization’s funding streams. A new position as ROP seeks to grow it’s organizational capacity, the Director will have the opportunity to build the development function and play a key role in the growth and expansion of ROP.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze current fundraising approach, identify priorities, and develop and implement new fundraising strategies with measurable outcomes set jointly with the COO;
  • Create and implement an innovative and solid annual fundraising plan and strategy, as well as a long-term plan to significantly grow and diversify revenue streams over the next 2-5 years;
  • Establish goals; develop and manage annual fundraising budget and work plan to raise $1M+ per year beginning in 2013;
  • Staff the Development Committee of the Board and work closely with Board and Committee to cultivate prospective donors;
  • Foster an organization-wide knowledge of and involvement with fundraising;
  • Coordinate fundraising opportunities with planned events;
  • Write and present Fundraising updates for quarterly Board meetings.

Major Donors (Individual, Corporate and Foundation):

  • Develop and implement strategies, working closely with the CEO and COO, for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of current and new donors from individuals, foundations and corporations. Working with public donors like USAID, World Bank and USDA are not part of the scope of work;
  • Develop and maintain a structure for building continuing relationships to ensure their growing commitment to ROP.

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years of nonprofit fundraising/development experience, preferably with significant individual donor and corporate/foundation donors;
  • Proven track record of achieving fundraising targets of over $1M annually and brings to the position a strong network of relationships in the corporate and private donor community;
  • Able to “hit the ground running” and engage prospective funders with whom you have built relationships that would be interested in the ROP model;
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and manage new and existing donors;
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and thorough understanding of building a diversified funding base;
  • Vision in developing strategic organizational partnerships to leverage prospective funding opportunities and expand upon existing programs;
  • Proven project management and leadership capabilities;
  • Self-motivated, possess high degree of initiative, work well under pressure and able to handle several projects at-once;
  • Ability to think “outside the box” and comfortable in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively;
  • Good knowledge of Salesforce database program;
  • Ability to develop and manage budgets, and prepare financial reports.
