Director of Foundation Relations

The Director of Foundation Relations, based in our NYC headquarters will be responsible for devising and implementing aggressive growth strategies to increase revenues to support Amnesty International's human rights programs, membership engagement, research, campaigning and advocacy. The incumbent will oversee all aspects of institutional fundraising, including donor research, cultivation and stewardship, proposal writing (including proposal budgets) and grant reporting. Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, External Affairs, and with the support of a development associate, s/he will be responsible for growing the proportion of AIUSA's revenue from these sources. The Director is a member of the External Affairs Senior Management Team and a senior leader within AIUSA.

Responsibilities:

• Lead AIUSA in the development and execution of strategy to increase funding from foundations - identify highest potential targets and approaches to securing their support
• Develop effective partnerships with senior staff in program, research, campaigns, and others, help develop program concepts that can attract funding and further AIUSA's mission
• Build deep strategic relationships for AIUSA with foundation counterparts
• Examine the potential for AIUSA to secure donations from vetted corporations and developing and implementing a strategy to capture this potential
• Write and edit eloquent, well-formulated and persuasive grant applications and supporting materials
• Develop annual income budgets for institutional funding, as well as provide timely updates and forecasts
• Participate in AIUSA's national Board of Directors' Development Committee and prepare materials/presentations for board meetings
• Supervise the Associate, who supports institutional fundraising
• Secure new donors through research and prospecting, networking, cultivation meetings, letters of inquiry, development of grant proposals and budgets, negotiation of terms, etc.
• Increase funding from current donors through timely reporting, attentive stewardship and development of compelling renewal proposals
• Work with the program directors and major gift officers to develop events that engage current and new funding relationships
• In close collaboration with the financial and program staff, ensure that grant requirements, including timely programmatic and financial reporting, are met.
• Expected to develop and maintain strong relationships with current and prospective donors.

Requirements include:

• Ideally a minimum of 7 years of work experience in nonprofit fundraising, ideally with at least five years in institutional or foundation fundraising; Exceptional candidates without foundations experience will be considered if they can demonstrate superb writing, presentation and organizational skills
• 3-5 years of program/project management experience
• Superior writing and editing skills, demonstrated with samples of proposals, letters of inquiry or other significant work authored solely by the candidate
• Ability to gain familiarity with AIUSA's cutting edge human rights agenda, and - within a short timeframe - to speak comfortably about complex human rights questions and debates
• Experience and contacts in international human rights or a relevant field (e.g., development, social justice, public health or international affairs)
• Strong oral communication skills
• Strong critical thinking, analysis, concept development and program budgeting skills; experience interpreting, presenting, monitoring and evaluating results
• Creativity and drive - willingness and ability to take the initiative to surmount obstacles
• Excellent organizational skills with high attention to detail
• Leadership skills, including independent initiative, staff management and coordination, meeting facilitation, flexibility, ability to drive multiple aspects of initiatives and projects from inception to implementation within a limited time frame and ability to develop and sustain effective working relationships with people of diverse backgrounds and levels of expertise
• Superb interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build excellent working relationships with colleagues and external parties
• Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree a plus; must have excellent academic credentials
• Domestic and international travel required (20%)
