Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights (UAF) is an international human rights foundation dedicated to the support of women activists working in conflict or crisis situations. Through our programs of Rapid Response Grantmaking and Research, Publications & Advocacy, we support women who are striving to promote and protect the rights and interests of women and girls by ensuring women’s security and participation in conflict prevention and resolution, peace building, and post-conflict reconstruction. Based in San Francisco, CA. we work in partnership with our independent sister organization, Urgent Action Fund-Africa, located in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Position

The Grantmaking Intern assists with the portfolio of grants for Urgent Action Fund’s international Rapid-Response Grantmaking Program. S/he works with the Program Officer to review, prioritize and manage requests from organizations seeking funding and actively participates in the overall growth of the organization.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Manage all documentation and follow-up (paperwork, final reports) with grantees;
  • Manage the grantmaking database including data-entry of incoming grant proposals;
  • Prepare written summaries of approved grants and final reports;
  • Provide administrative support for grantmaking staff;
  • Review incoming proposals from groups worldwide and perform necessary due diligence in collaboration with the Program Officer;
  • Draft communications with grant applicants, colleagues and the Board of Directors;
  • Represent Urgent Action Fund at public events;

The Grantmaking Intern also reviews grant requests on weekends, bi-weekly, and may be required to take on additional grantmaking responsibilities in the Program Officer’s absence.

Qualifications

  • Excellent organizational skills, an ability to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop solid professional relationships and work well independently as well as in a group setting;
  • Strong oral and written communications skills required;
  • A deep commitment to women's issues;
  • Demonstrated appreciation and respect for diverse cultures;
  • Flexible and willing to assume a range of unanticipated assignments;
  • International experience required;
  • Strong analytical skills required;
  • Strong computer skills required, including proficiency in Word and Excel; familiarity with FileMaker Pro and Mac computers preferred;
  • Spanish, Russian or Arabic language skills required;
