Senior Consultant

Established in 2004, Root Cause is a nonprofit consulting and research firm that partners with nonprofits, philanthropy, government, and business to advance solutions to today’s toughest social issues. For the past ten years, Root Cause’s consulting practice has offered an array of services (including strategy and implementation, measurement, and financial sustainability engagements) designed to help organizations and the people who lead them work more effectively towards greater social impact. Consulting teams, typically made up of a senior consultant and one or more research associates, are assigned regionally and nationally to a wide variety of projects in areas such as education and youth development, health and wellness, and economic development. We are known for taking an approach that is collaborative, pragmatic, and implementation-focused, balancing our conceptual management skills with our real-world experience as nonprofit leaders and entrepreneurs.

The consulting practice is seeking experienced senior-level professionals to join the team to collectively lead the practice to greater growth and social impact. All applicants must have a track record of success in consulting, either independently or with a firm, as demonstrated by their ability to consistently sell and lead engagements that deliver practical value to clients. Those who join the practice will be able to leverage Root Cause’s solid infrastructure to sell and lead engagements, which includes:

• A firm with a national reputation
• A team of seasoned professionals
• A group of high-performing research associates to support engagements
• Sales and marketing support, including scope development
• Financial management, including billing and engagement tracking
• Technology infrastructure to track business development and consulting capacity

REQUIREMENTS

• 15+ years of professional work experience, including a minimum of five years of experience as a senior-level professional in consulting with a track record of service to nonprofits or foundations
• Demonstrated ability to build and leverage networks relevant to Root Cause’s service lines (strategy and implementation, measurement, financial sustainability) and social impact areas (education and youth development, health and wellness, and economic development) preferred
• Consulting sales experience with responsibility for meeting revenue and profitability targets
• Some experience as a practitioner preferred, with emphasis on building and leading initiatives or organizations
• Graduate degree—MBA preferred. Equivalent degrees include MPA, MPH, MEd, and MSW.
• Strong relationship management, project management, analytical, problem-solving, writing and presentation skills
• Comfort with ambiguity as projects and processes develop and change; ability to work well in an entrepreneurial environment
• Track record of working well with junior staff, making a genuine commitment to support their learning and professional development and using sound judgment to delegate appropriately
