The Director, Donor Relations manages Girl Scouts of the USA’s (GSUSA) donor relations and stewardship programs, designed to comprise an increasingly comprehensive and thoughtful approach to the engagement, cultivation, stewardship, and recognition of donors and prospects. She/he is charged with creating donor-centric approaches that demonstrate respect for donors to GSUSA and councils, recognizing the impact of their philanthropy on the Movement. The Director, Donor Relations is responsible for all aspects of donor relations and stewardship, including donor programs, management, communications and r events. She/he will work with internal constituencies such as volunteers, senior administrators, board members, major gifts officers, as well as donors, to coordinate all efforts in donor relations and stewardship. Serving as an essential member of the Fund Development Services team, she/he will develop guiding principles, policies, and procedures; develop the cap acity and effectiveness of donor relations and stewardship across GSUSA; and implement these programs with an eye to building a robust culture of philanthropy and increased revenue across the Movement.
The Director, Donor Relations will work with Fund Development Services colleagues to define position, strengthen, and implement donor relations and stewardship opportunities by collaborating with leaders and staff to ensure that major donors and prospects receive substantive, timely, and meaningful stewardship.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years fundraising experience required, preferably in a non-profit, major gifts environment
- Minimum of 4 years recent experience with demonstrated success in managing a portfolio of major donors. Successful track record of effectively working within the philanthropic community and developing and sustaining personal relationships with individuals resulting in the attraction and retention of donor investments
- Minimum of 2 years experience and proficiency in a fund development database (e.g., Raiser’s Edge) and other prospect tracking systems, along with Microsoft Office Suite
- Minimum of 2 years experience and proficiency in donor-focused event planning, preferably in a non-profit major gifts environment
- Demonstrated experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously with changing priorities and tight deadlines. Depending on the project, working as either a project leader or project team member where the success of the project supersedes individual role responsibilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of fundraising data management and systems and of the fundraising and philanthropy industry, along with a vast knowledge of prospect research, donor relations and stewardship
- Excellent time management skills, a proven ability to work with grace under pressure during peak workload periods and the ability to see work through to completion
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including clear communication with staff, internal groups and stakeholders; strong customer service skills, along with close attention to detail
- Proven experience in grant or proposal writing and demonstrated track record in solicitation skills
- Demonstrated problem solving skills and inherent decision-making skill, as well as initiative and assertiveness skills required
- Strong analytical skills required to study and interpret user business requirements and business processes; perform analysis, research and follow-through in a timely manner
- Demonstrated experience working in a highly collaborative environment where teamwork, collegiality and self-motivation were necessary for success
- Demonstrated experience exercising independent judgment and acting within established policies and procedures, along with expertise in handling multiple high-level projects simultaneously essential
- Proven experience working independently as well as part of a team while fostering a team-focused environment that encourages collaboration and peer support
- Travel up to 20% of the time involving day trips, overnight travel and on weekends, when required.
- Valid driver’s license to drive to various geographic locations, as needed
- Bachelor’s degree in Fund Development, Business or related area, or equivalent relevant experience. Master’s degree in related area desirable; CFRE a plus
