Direct Support Professional

Arc of San Diego

Arc of San Diego - Direct Support Professional Plans and provides instruction to assist each consumer to gain his/her fullest potential and meet Individual Program Plan goals and objectives through specialized services and supports in the areas of employment, postsecondary education, independent living, and socialization and recreational/leisure that furthers person centered service excellence. Provides additional supports in other areas based on an individual’s needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and provides learning support experiences related to services being provided in classroom, community, vocational, and home environments to meet the needs and preferences of each consumer.
  • Supports consumers at employment sites, community training sites, at home and in the classroom.
  • Maintains attendance records and all required documentation and reports per agency procedures.
  • Maintains records and documentation of progress, follow-up and completes data collection on a regular basis.
  • Participates in the consumer’s assessment, planning and evaluation process.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of vocational and community resource sites.
  • Demonstrates job duties and tasks to consumer and observes consumer performing tasks to ensure understanding of job duties. Confers with consumer to explain or to demonstrate task again in order to resolve learning/performance related difficulties.
  • If applicable, assists in the time study process for consumers involved in paid work and maintains consumer payroll information.
  • Provides independent living training services to consumers at home and in the community.
  • Assists and supports consumers in accessing, enrolling in, and participating in postsecondary education.
  • Provides support to consumers in accessing and participating in socialization and recreational/leisure activities.
  • Assists consumers with their self-help needs, including support in the areas of grooming, hygiene, toileting, feeding and mobility.
  • Maintains consumer and program confidentiality.
  • Implements and maintains consumer behavior management plans.
  • Maintains a professional relationship with employers, community resource sites, consumers, parents and care providers, and others as appropriate.
  • Participates in the San Diego Regional Center Individual Program Plan process as part of the support team.
  • Attends and participates in all required meetings and training sessions.
  • Demonstrates on a daily bases the organization’s Vision, Mission and Core Values.
  • Ensures safety and welfare of staff and consumers and follows adopted procedures in order to report accidents, hazards, incidents, or unsafe conditions to immediate supervisor. Is a mandated reporter of suspected abuse and will follow all guidelines established to meet this requirement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Associate Degree from an accredited college/university or equivalent with one year related experience and/or training of hands-on direct care experience with persons with developmental disabilities. Must possess a current CPR/First Aid certification throughout the duration of employment. Must have a valid California Drivers license, have 24 months of driving experience, and be able to transport consumers in personal vehicle.
