Friends of the Bay - Executive Director
Friends of the Bay's (FOB) mission is to preserve, protect and restore the ecological integrity and productivity of the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor estuary and the surrounding watershed. Widely recognized as one of the most effective and respected environmental organizations on Long Island, award-winning FOB is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the day-to-day administration and management of the organization, including programs, fundraising and business operations. Areas of responsibility include planning and evaluation, policy development recommendations, marketing and public relations, administration, personnel oversight, and fiscal management in coordination with the Treasurer. The ED is responsible for developing and implementing an effective government relations agenda for federal, state, and local agencies and elected officials. The ED partners with federal, state, and local agencies, as well as other environmental organizations and civic groups, to build support. The ED communicates and advances FOB’s goals. The ED is hired by and accountable to the Board of Directors. Specific duties include:

Serve as the point-person for FOB with federal, state and local agencies and elected officials.

Develop an annual budget for review by the Treasurer and approval by the Board of Directors; administer, and track the approved budget; together with the Treasurer.

Work with the Board to develop and implement year-round fundraising programs.

Handle all aspects of grant writing.

Maintain high level of watchdog activity within the estuary and its watershed with focus on the Harbor Management Plan, local waterfront revitalization plans, and waterfront redevelopment.

Monitor, review and analyze planned public and private sector actions for potential adverse impacts to the estuary/watershed and prepare written and oral comments during environmental impact review process.

Manage FOB’s media, community, government, and volunteer relations/communications.

Guide and advise FOB’s Board of Directors and Advisory Board on local and regional environmental issues.

Prepare periodic activity reports for the Board of Directors and Advisory Board.
KNOWLEDGE/ SKILL PREFERENCES:
-
Advanced degree in natural resource management, environmental policy or related field experience or equivalent combination.

Understanding of federal and state policy for coastal and marine management and land use issues.
-
Understanding of non-profit management.
-
Research, writing and communications skills.
-
Experience in government affairs and decision-making processes. Lobbying experience preferred.

Experience in partnership and coalition building and development.

Ability to represent FOB to elected officials, agencies, outside organizations, and members of the public.

Ability to work effectively with others involved in the organization; good team-playing skills.

Well-organized and self-starter.

Experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects.

Ability to resolve routine issues independently in consultation with the Executive Committee.

Experience with MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and the internet. Ability to master new programs.
COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
- Network with diverse groups, including land owners, water quality and conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members, volunteers and the general public.
- Provide information to the Board of Directors, Advisory Board, staff, volunteers and others.
- Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including consultants, government officials, and others.
- Ability to simplify and explain science and technical matters to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Communicate strategic project goals and objectives.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Willingness to work flexible hours with occasional evening/weekend meetings.
