Fair Housing Justice Center - Executive Director

The Fair Housing Justice Center, Inc. (FHJC) is seeking an Executive Director. The Executive Director is responsible for overall administrative, financial, and programmatic operation of the FHJC. The Executive Director supervises all staff and reports to the FHJC Board of Directors. The mission of the FHJC is to: 1) eliminate housing discrimination; 2) promote open, accessible, and inclusive communities; and 3) strengthen enforcement of fair housing laws. FHJC program activities (described at www.fairhousingjustice.org) are focused on removing discriminatory barriers to housing choice within the New York City region.

Organized in 2004, the FHJC is a non-profit organization that currently has a small, effective professional staff and over 100 part-time employees who participate as “testers” in fair housing investigations. Governed by a dedicated Board of Directors, the FHJC has an operating budget of over $1 million from public and private sources. An effective testing program and partnerships with area law firms and government enforcement agencies have enabled the FHJC to eliminate discriminatory housing practices and open up housing opportunities throughout the region. This position is an excellent opportunity for a talented professional with a passion for work in the fair housing/civil rights field. The FHJC Board seeks an individual with exceptional leadership and communication skills, a strategic vision, and the strong fundraising and management abilities needed to orchestrate the organization’s future growth and development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee development, implementation and enforcement of organizational policies and procedures regarding personnel, financial and program administration and planning
  • Identify, secure and manage funding for the FHJC, including foundation and government grants, contracts, donations, fundraising events and other sources
  • Testify for public hearings and in fair housing cases as required
  • Review and approve web site content; training and outreach materials; newsletters; press releases; reports and other organizational materials and publications
  • Liaison with the Board of Directors, the President, and the Executive Committee to apprise them of significant issues or developments affecting the organization and its mission
  • Oversee all administrative activities including, but not limited to: conducting regular staff meetings; negotiating and managing all service contracts and grants; attending Board meetings and preparing reports for the FHJC Board of Directors
  • Maintain communication with other fair housing enforcement organizations and coordinate contact with media regarding FHJC activities and fair housing issues
  • Assist with long-range planning, policy development, fundraising events, and other activities as required by the FHJC Board of Directors

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience required
  • J.D. helpful but not required
  • Minimum five years of experience in fair housing/civil rights field
  • Minimum five years of supervisory experience preferred
  • Grant-writing and fundraising experience a strong plus
  • Strong analytical and writing skills
