The Nellie Mae Education Foundation (NMEF), New England’s largest public
charity focused solely on education, is looking for a new Director of Strategic
Communications. This is an exciting opportunity to make a lasting impact on the
educational landscape in New England. The new Director will be an expert in the
many tools available for today’s communications professional, a compelling
communicator, and a relationship-builder. S/he will bring strong strategic and
creative thinking, complemented by pragmatism and the ability to implement at
many levels. An effective manager of both people and projects, s/he will
oversee the operation of a small department and the work of consultants.
NMEF works to reshape public education across New England to be more equitable
and more effective, so that every learner graduates from high school prepared
for success. NMEF has an ambitious scope of activities to achieve its sweeping
vision for public education, including: influencing and promoting successful,
research-based practices; influencing policy at the local, state, and national
levels; and catalyzing public support for innovative reform initiatives. For

The Director of Strategic Communications will have responsibility for all
internal and external communications functions, while also playing an important
role in NMEF’s strategic leadership. Working with the senior team, s/he
will help to refine and coordinate the implementation of a Foundation Public
Understanding and Demand (PU&D) Strategy, helping to position the Foundation
as a thought leader in education reform. In addition, s/he will translate and
adapt complex information for delivery to multiple audiences, including
policy-makers, practitioners, community leaders and other organizations, and be
savvy about how NMEF can leverage its network of partners and other entities to
accomplish its mission.
