Korean American Community Foundation - Development Officer

The Korean American Community Foundation (KACF) transforms and empowers communities through philanthropy, volunteerism and inter-community bridge building.

KACF pursues these goals through grant making that promotes self-sufficiency for the underserved and under-resourced, through raising awareness of needs and issues, and by fostering a culture of giving.

Since its inception in 2002, KACF has become a trusted source of philanthropy within the Korean and Asian American communities.

To date, KACF has awarded nearly $2.7 million in grants to nonprofit organizations working to improve lives and transform communities.

As KACF enters its second decade, it continues its innovative work to support community based organizations in New York and New Jersey, funding in the areas of Economic Security, Health, Safety, Senior Empowerment and Youth Empowerment.

The Development Officer is responsible for implementing and leading a development strategy with the goal of continuously cultivating new and existing relationships and increasing philanthropic revenue to advance KACF’s mission.

A new position in the organization, based in New York City, the Development Officer will have the opportunity to help build robust development strategies and practices. S/he will work closely with members of the Board of Directors and its Development Committee and formulate individual engagement strategies for each member.

The Development Officer will report to the Executive Director and work in partnership with a four other fulltime staff members--Program Officer, Operations Manager, Communications & Administrative Associate and Executive Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Board Liaison and Development: Provide leadership and staff support to the Board of Directors and Development Committee in carrying out fundraising responsibilities; work closely with the Board to ensure that Board members are motivated, engaged and energized with their association with KACF.
  • Strategy: Develop, implement and monitor KACF’s short- and long-term development strategy under the guidance of the Executive Director; Prepare an annual, written development strategy including proposed calendar of events, financial projections and a written articulation of how budgetary goals will be met across each fiscal year.
  • Individual Donors: Proactively research, identify, cultivate and then solicit potential major donors in partnership with the Executive Director.
  • Foundation and Corporate Donors: Research, identify and prepare grant proposals and reports for foundation and corporate support.
  • Donor and Volunteer Stewardship: Develop and implement stewardship initiatives aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors and volunteers.
  • Events: Plan and coordinate special fundraising events and project-manage an Annual Gala, which is executed with support from a fundraising/event planning company.
  • Marketing and Communications Initiatives: Ensure that marketing and development initiatives are aligned and integrated and develop PR materials that inform and reflect the organization's brand identity, working closely with the Communications & Administrative Associate.
  • Information systems and reporting: Further build departmental information and technology systems, including prospect tracking, reporting, mailings and online fundraising tools. Monitor and report regularly on the progress of development initiatives to the Executive Director, Development Committee and the Board of Directors.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of Development experience.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in donor database software (preferably Etapestry).
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational and communications skills.
  • Effective in a cross-cultural work environment.
  • Korean language skills an asset but not required.

KNOWEDGE & SKILLS

  • Fundraising: Proven fundraising generalist with at least 5 -year track record of securing financial support from individuals, foundations and corporations.
  • Relationship Building: Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current donor relationships and forge new ones; possesses a record of fostering successful long-term relationships with funders; and skilled at building relationships with staff throughout the organization for effective collaboration.
  • Event Planning: Experienced in leading, planning and managing large and small fundraising events and other development projects.
  • Leadership: Operates with a high degree of personal and professional integrity and inspires the respect and confidence of donors, foundation executives, staff and Board members.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail and persistent but appropriate follow-up with prospects and donors.

COMMUNICATINS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS

  • Excellent writing skills with ability to provide samples of compelling proposals upon request.
  • Superb communications and presentation skills with the ability to persuasively convey the mission of KACF’s programs and priorities to diverse groups.
  • Ability to leverage constructive and effective relationships inside and outside the organization.
  • Ability to anticipate opportunities, be agile and creative, problem solve, exercise good judgment, practice humility and have empathy and openness for people and ideas.
