Keep a Child Alive - Senior Program Officer

Founded in 2002 by 12-time Grammy Award winner Alicia Keys and AIDS activist Leigh Blake, Keep a Child Alive (KCA) provides treatment, care and support to over 300,000 families affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India. KCA focuses on treatment by making antiretroviral drugs available to children and families that cannot afford it. We also believe that along with drugs, children and adults living with HIV need compassionate and comprehensive care and support. KCA is also committed to providing care for children who have been orphaned by AIDS in Africa and India, giving them hope for a future. We currently support 8 comprehensive treatment and other care programs through locally run organizations in South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and India and over 9,000 people on anti-retroviral therapy.

Position Description

Reporting to the Director of Programs, the Senior Program Officer will be responsible for supporting KCA programs to achieve their results. In addition to knowledge and experience in HIV technical areas and programming, Keep a Child Alive is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented and personable team player. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills and a passion to work within our dynamic and growing organization. This position will be based at the organization’s office in Brooklyn, New York with frequent travel to Africa and India (up to 30%).

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in implementing KCA’s strategic approach to HIV programming and contribute to the Program Department’s annual workplan and budget.
  • Support the Director of Programs in the provision of technical and programmatic assistance to KCA’s projects and staff in Africa and India (directly and via email/other communications).
  • Assist the Director of Programs with project planning, management, evaluation, capacity building, partnerships, new opportunity assessments, and grants management.
  • Make recommendations regarding programmatic adjustments and innovative program initiatives to the Director of Programs.
  • Assist in the implementation of monitoring and evaluation and quality improvement systems for all of KCA’s projects.
  • Strengthen program quality and sustainability by facilitating collaborative networks among partners, local service providers, local government, and corporate/other donors.
  • Manage foundation grants including design, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with communications, business development, and other departments and staff within KCA.
  • Work with communications-focused and other KCA staff to develop necessary content/information for inclusion in social media, the KCA website, reports and other donor or partner communications.
  • Participate in HIV fora, working groups and conferences to stay abreast of developments in the field, expand networks, and give visibility to KCA’s work in Africa and India.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned.

Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years work experience in global health, with a preference for HIV-related programs and services (HIV care and treatment, pediatrics, orphan care, nutrition, youth-friendly services, etc.)
  • Masters in Public Health, or related degree, required.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, implementing and monitoring HIV programs; experience with HIV programming in a sub-Saharan Africa and India desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and liaise across a broad range of cultural and geographic settings and within a diverse range of stakeholders including non-profit, governmental, academic, corporate and indigenous community groups.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills and experience communicating across a range of stakeholders and media, including technical writing, donor reporting, creative writing and electronic communication.
  • Experience in workshop design and implementation, training, and facilitation a plus.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Knowledge of data management and project management tools a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven teamwork and leadership ability.

  • Disciplined and organized; ability to prioritize in a fast paced environment.
  • Self-starter and critical and creative thinker.
  • Commitment to excellence in the development and growth of the organization.
  • Innovator and entrepreneurial spirit.
  • French or other language skills useful in sub-Saharan Africa and India preferred.
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 30% of the year.
