Teach For America - Executive Director

Position Summary:

We are seeking an executive director to maximize Teach For America's impact in the region, both in the short term as we work to achieve our ambitious growth goals, and in the longer term to drive the vision and plan to end educational inequity in Metro Atlanta. The work of the executive director is grounded in the ability to invest and engage community stakeholders as vital partners in this work and to effectively hire, manage and develop a diverse team of high performing individuals to reach ambitious goals.

The Metro Atlanta executive director will be deeply committed to diversity and inclusiveness and will present a record of dedication to working and partnering with diverse constituencies, including low-income communities and communities of color.

Teach For America's 43 executive directors are a part of the national senior leadership team at Teach For America and operate at the forefront of ending educational inequity in this country; impacting the life trajectories of thousands of children. The Metro Atlanta executive director is supported by a local advisory board, reports to a senior vice president of regional operations (who sits on the national Teach For America team), and manages a team of more than 40 staff members.

Team Overview:
Founded in 2000, TFA has placed 1,200 corps members in Metro Atlanta, positively impacting 125,000 low-income students. Currently 385 corps members teach in Atlanta Public Schools, Clayton County Public Schools, the Cobb County School District, DeKalb County Schools, Fulton County Schools, Gwinnett County Public Schools, several charter schools, and pre-kindergarten providers across the region. Of the 800 alumni living and working in Metro Atlanta, 67 percent continue to drive education reform from both inside and outside of the classroom, including 8 school leaders, 380 teachers and an alumnus heading the Metro Atlanta KIPP network. Over 44,000 low-income students are positively impacted by TFA corps members and alumni a day.

The region is supported by a funding base of more than $10 million, and regional staff members work to train and support corps members, continually strengthen relationships with local schools and districts, foster the leadership of local alumni, and continue to grow the regional funding base to ensure that Teach For America - Metro Atlanta can have an even greater impact.

Responsibilities:

  • Set overarching regional vision and direction and work to establish Teach For America as an integral partner in the Metro Atlanta education reform community
  • Engage and cultivate diverse stakeholders
  • Build and manage a team

Candidate Profile and Experience Prerequisites:

Skills and Mindsets:

  • Demonstrates a deep commitment to and belief in Teach For America's mission and theory of change
  • Consistently operates with the organization's core values in mind (transformational change, leadership, team, diversity, respect & humility) and guides the regional team as an organizational and culture leader
  • Desire and orientation to navigate complex situations; desire and ability to understand people dynamics and networks; political savvy
  • Demonstrates excellent judgment, and operates with a high level of personal responsibility, optimism, and entrepreneurialism
  • Gets results by managing through others and across multiple layers and lines of difference
  • Skilled at and invested in coaching others and playing a role in their long-term professional development

Experience:

  • Proven ability to set an inspiring vision and motivate diverse stakeholders to reach ambitious goals in support of that vision
  • School, district and/or CMO-based experience strongly preferred
  • Fundraising or development experience preferred
  • Management experience required
  • Bachelor's degree required
