Metropolitan Washington Ear - Development Officer
The Metropolitan Washington Ear (MWE) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that provides news and information services for blind, visually impaired and physically disabled people who cannot read ordinary print. Current news can be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week via radio broadcast/or dial-in telephone. MWE’s free services strive to substitute hearing for seeing, improving the lives of people with limited or no vision by enabling them to be well-informed, fully productive members of their families, their communities and the working world.
Primary Responsibilities
- Prepares all applications for funding from the local jurisdictions, State of Maryland, and the State of Virginia
- Tracks progress of applications to the political jurisdictions and prepares all invoices for the local jurisdictions. Also tracks the payments from the political jurisdictions
- Researches new sources of funding at the Foundation Center Library and other sources
- Prepares quarterly letter to listeners and callers
- Attends budget hearings when requested by the local political jurisdictions or when the Development Officer determines that a physical presence at a hearing regarding funding for MWE is necessary
- Prepares reports on funding that has been received and what is outstanding and presents them at the Board of Director Meetings
- Sends reports to various foundations and local jurisdictions that request information regarding the use of the grant funds
- Seeks out local politicians, columnists and writers from the Washington Post to be “Guest Readers” for reading during our live broadcast of the reading of the Washington Post on weekday mornings
- Reports to the Executive Director
Qualifications
- Two to three years of experience with a proven track record of successfully raising money, including foundations, corporations and individual donors
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to understand and effectively communicate the effect on visually impaired and physically handicapped individuals who can no longer effectively read ordinary print
- Secure knowledge of Microsoft Office required
- Experience in a non-profit environment a plus
- Outstanding organizational skills, and ability to set, maintain, and meet deadlines
