Columbia University School of the Arts - Development Officer

BASIC FUNCTION:
Reporting to the Associate Director for Corporate and Individual Giving at the School of the Arts, the Development Officer will manage a portfolio of 75 prospects with the capacity to make gifts in the $5,000 - $100,000 range to the School of the Arts, Miller Theatre and the Arts Initiative. The Officer will make 100 personal visits and 18 solicitations per year. The range of solicitations will include annual fund, fellowships, and a variety of special projects. He/she will coordinate the School of the Arts' and Miller Theatre's annual fund efforts. The annual fund efforts for Miller Theatre will be coordinated with the theater's subscription program.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES:
Identify and qualify new prospects; cultivate potential contributors; develop solicitation strategies; identify gift opportunities that match donors' interests; personally solicit gifts and continually steward donors.

For SOA and Miller Theatre's annual fund efforts, develop the written pieces and manage the list development activities to develop annual fund targets and to expand the donor base. Serve as the School's key liaison with the University's Annual Fund program in its management of the production and mailing of the print pieces and the telephone fundraising effort. Coordinate the acknowledgement of gifts, with support of the shared departmental Development Assistant.

Support fundraising for the Visual Arts thesis show as needed.

As needed, work with Development Associate to manage logistics, invitation mailings, staffing and follow up for Development events associated with School of the Arts student, faculty and alumni programming and Miller Theatre programs.

Manage the Annual Fund Committee, composed of 10 School of the Arts alumni who meets twice each year and who participate in volunteer fundraising efforts among fellow alumni.

Other related duties as assigned.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, required; advanced degree desirable. A minimum of 5 years of related experience required.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated experience and interest in personal solicitation of prospective donors.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Outstanding strategic thinking and analytical skills.
  • Strong organizational and follow through abilities.
  • Project management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the arts and to higher education
  • An ability to make a compelling case in support of the School of the Arts and Miller Theatre.
  • Availability to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and experience handling highly confidential information.
  • High energy level, enthusiasm, flexibility and an entrepreneurial spirit absolutely required.
