Hoover Institution, Stanford University - Director for Development

The Hoover Institution, Stanford University, is a public policy research center devoted to the advanced study of public policy, politics, economics, history, law and international affairs. With distinguished scholars, ongoing programs of policy-oriented research, and major archival collections, the Hoover Institution seeks to develop and advance “ideas defining a free society.”

The Office of Development seeks to raise financial support for the ongoing work of the Institution, and also seeks funding for new initiatives as well as endowment and capital projects. With a staff of approximately ten people, it carries out a heavy schedule of events and activities to cultivate a donor base of 350 Hoover Council members and 110 members of the Board of Overseers. Currently, the Office seeks to raise $20 million or more in annual support, and typically an additional $10-$20 million each year in endowment, capital and other major gifts, with over 90% of Hoover’s gifts coming from individuals or their foundations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Director of the Hoover Institution, the Director for Development (and Associate Director of the Hoover Institution) serves as a visible and articulate representative of the Institution, with the objective of cultivating relationships that produce annual gifts of $10,000 and up, major annual gifts of $100,000 and up, along with larger endowment, project and capital gifts of $1,000,000 or more. The Director works with senior colleagues to formulate, develop and implement programmatic efforts, oversee events and cultivate external relationships that will result in significant gifts to the Institution. The Director will oversee staff and work collaboratively with Hoover fellows, administrators, board members and volunteers, while also coordinating efforts with the Stanford University Office of Development. The Director will oversee field staff, events and support teams, but will also be directly involved in donor relationships and cultivation. Oversight of techn ology for donor records and management is also a priority.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Hoover Institution seeks candidates with the capacity for energetic, resourceful, creative and proven leadership. Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree, and preferably an advanced degree, and should have at least 5-10 years of demonstrated leadership in a relevant setting. A keen interest in public policy, along with an ability to communicate effectively with colleague directors and senior scholars about their programs and research are key attributes. A proven ability to engage and persuade people through sales, marketing, development or other fundraising or leadership success will be most helpful.
