Teach For America - Vice President, Regional Growth Strategy and Development
The Vice President, Regional Growth Strategy & Development is responsible for ensuring that Teach For America sustainably and strategically builds public and private support necessary to maximize our impact in regions across the nation. The Vice President manages a team of twelve staff members who collectively deliver the consulting, coaching, tools, and resources for regional leaders and teams as they strive to build an ever-growing network of private and public sector champions, in particular to strategically find and seize opportunities to grow Teach For America's scale and footprint, and correspondingly generate the revenue to support that growth. Teach For America's 46 regions placed over 5,800 new corps members, and raised 80% of the organization's annual operating funding, totaling over $225 million in FY12. We are planning to grow to nearly 60 regions, 8,100 incoming corps members, and $350 million in regional funding by 2015. The VP will report directly to the Executive Vice President, Growth, Development, & Partnerships and will serve as a critical member of the Growth, Development, & Partnerships leadership team. The VP also works closely with regional Executive Directors, Regional Operations team, and Finance.
Team Overview
The Growth Strategy and Regional Development team helps Teach For America fulfill our potential as a force for change by cultivating public and private sector champions, marshaling resources, and strategically seizing opportunities for expansion and revenue growth in both new and existing regions.
The Regional Growth Strategy & Development sub-team provides support, coaching and on-the-ground tactical resources necessary for regions to build an ever-growing network of private and public sector champions and to meet their growth and fundraising goals. The team works closely with teams in regions to help them set their regional goals, develop strategic and operational plans to reach their goals, and connects regional teams with national resources that can support their efforts.
Responsibilities
- Developing a comprehensive vision and strategy, in conjunction with the Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice Presidents of Regional Operations, for how our regions build an ever-growing network of private and public sector champions and meet their growth and fundraising goals
- Ensuring that regions have the capacity to execute on this vision and strategy successfully including developing an approach to sourcing, hiring, training, and supporting development and district and school partnerships staff
- Building, developing, and retaining a strong team - managing and supporting nine direct reports; consistently fostering their engagement and professional development; cultivating a strong team culture based on our core values and reflective of our commitment to diversity and inclusiveness
- Analyzing national trends in development and district and school partnership progress and develop recommendations for shifts in strategy or execution based on acute observations and data
- Building relationships and credibility with regions and regional operations team and effectively influence them to deliver results
- Working with the Learning & Operations team to codify best practices and roll them out to regional staff and provide the best training and tools to cultivate private and public sector support
- Collaborating with VP, Growth Strategy & New Sites to develop and inform regional growth strategy
- Partnering with other functional teams, including Human Assets, Marketing, and Finance/Planning & Analysis, to equip regions with additional national support to reach their growth and development goals
- Creating a strong partnership with the National Development team to ensure optimal coordination across regional and national teams, maximize the interests of donors, and leverage synergies
- Building community among regional development and district & school partnership staff members and an esprit de corps
- This role will require regular travel (approximately 2-3 site visits to our regional offices per month).
Candidate Profile and Experience Prerequisites
- Bachelor's degree required
- Minimum of eight years of work experience
- Exceptional goal orientation and an excellent strategic thinker with a proven track record of success
- Ability to build strong relationships with, and coach and motivate, various types of people
- Excellent client-service orientation and follow-through
- Excels in an entrepreneurial environment, yet can navigate the nuances of a matrix organization
- Ability to learn quickly and continuously improve in a wide range of responsibilities, even amidst a fast-paced and challenging environment
- A deep belief in Teach For America's mission and theory of change
