AcademyHealth - Director of Conferences

AcademyHealth, a leading national organization serving the fields of health services and policy research and the professionals who produce and use this important work, is currently seeking a Director of Conferences to oversee the successful planning, program development, and execution of our ever growing conferences and educational programs, including the Annual Research Meeting, National Health Policy Conference, Health Policy Orientation, the AcademyHealth awards program, and a growing suite of online educational offerings. These conferences are a central value of AcademyHealth membership and are recognized as superbly executed by a talented and functional team.

The Director will report to the Vice President of Operations, will supervise a four-person conferences team, and will work collaboratively with senior staff across many programmatic areas in developing superb content for educational programs.

The ideal candidate should have significant experience in developing educational events and programs for a health care or research association or organization, and some familiarity with a broad range of health care issues. The position requires knowledge and experience in financial and budget management, meeting planning, fundraising and relationship building with members, sponsors and other partners. The candidate must also have superior communication and organization skills, be results-oriented, collaborative, resourceful, and mature, with good judgment.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide oversight and strategic direction in developing and executing relevant, high quality and cutting-edge conferences and programs.
  • Responsible for the development of conference and program content and collaborating with various planning committees and AcademyHealth staff in agenda development, selection of keynote speakers, professional development sessions and activities, and other programming priorities.
  • Manage a cross - functional conferences team of four and coordinate its activities with other departments (IT, membership, and communications) to ensure successful delivery of conferences and events.
  • Oversee the team’s execution of conference and program activities including the marketing of events, logistics, sponsorship, exhibit and advertising sales, development and production of conference materials, and registration of participants.
  • Oversee AcademyHealth’s major awards processes.
  • Develop and effectively manage budgets and timelines to ensure timely completion of deliverables and achieve revenue and surplus targets.
  • Serve as a resource to internal staff, including collaborating with colleagues to leverage the conferences to support new and existing AcademyHealth members and programs.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with critical external partners including, professional societies, health care organizations, advisory committees, and other senior leaders in the fields of health services research and health policy.
  • Identify partnership and funding opportunities and promote relationship-building among AcademyHealth and other organizations and/or individuals.
  • Conduct annual evaluations to assess the strengths of the conferences and programs and identify areas for improvement; research industry trends and guide the development of new and innovative ideas to enhance and support AcademyHealth’s conferences and programs.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in business, education, or health-related discipline.
  • At least ten years of experience in developing and planning educational conferences and programs; previous experience with a health care or research association or membership organization a significant plus.
  • Interest in, and familiarity with, a broad range of health care issues.
  • Effective team leader with demonstrated ability to guide, engage, motivate, and maximize the strengths and capabilities of their team.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate with and relate to all levels both within and outside the organization.
  • Ability to cultivate an atmosphere of trust and respect.
  • Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Excellent analytic and strategic thinking skills.
  • Proven ability to network and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders, vendors, and organizations.
  • Strong commitment to teamwork and building collaborative relations with other departments.
  • Proven ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where everyone is expected to balance multiple roles and commitments.
  • Demonstrated project management experience, including an ability to efficiently plan, prioritize, and manage, multiple complex projects simultaneously with limited direct supervision.
  • Mature, detail-oriented, able to work independently and with a team, operate effectively under deadline pressure, and manage competing priorities.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and needs of the organization.
  • Strong work ethic, attention to quality and detail.
  • Commitment to open dialogue, constructive feedback, suggestions and ideas.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and make sound decisions quickly and efficiently.
  • Enthusiastic, engaging, approachable, resourceful, professional, and with a diplomatic demeanor.
  • Ability to think innovatively and creatively.

The salary range is $100,000 to $125,000.
