International Midwife Assistance - Executive Director

Position Overview:

Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the organization’s overall management and operation, procurement of annual revenues through a diversified fundraising portfolio and design and implementation of external relations. In addition, the Executive Director is responsible for ensuring compliance with board directives and applicable grantor, international, national and state requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Management and Operations

  • Responsible for reviewing, updating and monitoring annual and multi-year organizational strategic plans in coordinating with the Board of Directors and staff members.
  • Develop and manage annual and multi-year organizational and programmatic budgets for approval by the Board of Directors.
  • Design and implement strategies to utilize the skills and experiences of the existing board of directors in specific areas including board development, strategic planning, organizational development and fundraising.
  • Work with the Chair of the Board of Directors to plan and prepare for quarterly board meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with board directives (including annual organizational audit) and applicable international, national and state requirements relating to non-profit organizations and fundraising activities.
  • Responsible for hiring, training and supervising existing and future staff, contractors and administrative volunteers.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director in designing and implementing IMA’s programmatic goals and objectives as identified in the organizational strategic plan.
  • Review and approve requisitions for new equipment and supplies for IMA and its international partner.

Resource Development

  • Design and implement annual and multi-year resource development plans to meet projected revenue goals.
  • Identify and secure support through new funding opportunities with foundations, individual donors and corporations.
  • Write and submit proposals to and develop relationships with local, national and international grantors.
  • Develop individual donor cultivation plans for and meet with existing and prospective donors.
  • Responsible for grants management and reporting; coordinates with the board of directors, where necessary, to finalize grant agreement terms; monitors progress of agreements and maintains agreement documentation to ensure fulfillment of agreement terms including receipt and expenditure of funds.
  • Serve on the Annual Gala Organizing Committee to design and execute event planning and logistics.

External Relations

  • Serve as IMA’s external presence and promoter to maintain, grow and establish relationships with partners, stakeholders, donors and grantors.
  • Represent IMA at local, national and/or international events and secure opportunities to serve as a speaker, panelist, moderator or presenter at these events.
  • Design and implement a marketing and communications plan for IMA’s stakeholders, in coordination with the staff members and contractors.
  • Required Knowledge, Experience and Skills

    • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (advanced degree preferred).
    • 5+ years of Executive Director experience, or equivalent within the public or private sectors.
    • 5-7 years of proven success in:
      • Managing budget operations and meeting annual budget projections,
      • Writing proposals and securing financial commitments from foundations, state and federal agencies and/or corporations, and
      • Working with a Board of Directors and cultivating existing board member relationships.
    • Knowledge of and experience in non-profit management (within the healthcare field is preferred). Knowledge of laws and regulations related to non-profit management.
    • Experience with overseas medical missions and international work experience preferred.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong analytical and quantitative skills.
    • Organized and detail-oriented.
    • Ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Positive and hard working, committed to IMA’s mission.
    • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
