Program Officer

Brooklyn Community Foundation
Brooklyn, New York

Brooklyn Community Foundation - Program Officer

Brooklyn Community Foundation is Brooklyn’s primary philanthropic institution. It was created to improve the lives of people in Brooklyn by strengthening communities through local giving, grantmaking and community service. It serves as a vehicle for individuals, families and local businesses to support effective nonprofit work through five fields of interest funds: Community Development, Education and Youth Achievement, Green Communities, Arts for All and Caring Neighbors.

With assets valued at over $55 million, the Brooklyn Community Foundation relies on both its investment returns and a growing fundraising effort to support internal operations and annual grant making, which totaled $4.4 million in 2011.

The Foundation has a team of 9 staff deployed in program and grants management, community and donor development, communications and marketing, and financial and internal operations.

Position Description

Brooklyn Community Foundation seeks a Program Officer to be responsible for two of its key field of interest funds: Arts for All and Caring Neighbors. The Program Officer will be responsible for all aspects of grant making in these areas, including initial review and research, site visits, internal presentations and post award evaluations. The Program Officer will report to the Foundation’s senior Program Director, and work closely with the President, Chief Operating Officer and other members of the foundation staff.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Cultivate and maintain ongoing relationships with grantee partners, providing technical assistance and making connections to emerging opportunities and resources.
  • Review the impact of grant making strategies and participate in the evaluation of each Field of Interest Area to assess if the overall goals and objectives have been obtained as a result of the Foundation's strategic grant making framework.
  • Help to convene strategic planning sessions and public education forums/workshops to further the mission of the Brooklyn Community Foundation.
  • Help to organize and implement a variety of technical assistance sessions to build the capacity and leadership development of the non-profit sector.
  • Serve as an effective field leader for the Foundation through networking, advocacy and proactive participation with philanthropic partners, non-profit leaders and government agencies.
  • Maintain a breadth of knowledge regarding current trends, emerging issues, and pressing policy updates as they relate to the mission of the Foundation and the goals and objectives of the Field of Interest Funds.
  • Work closely with the COO and senior Program Director to manage and monitor programmatic and grant making budgets.
  • Represent the Foundation through speaking engagements and presentations in order to increase the visibility and fundraising capacity of the Foundation and its grantee partners.
  • Work collaboratively with all staff to enhance the Foundation's organizational effectiveness, outreach efforts to new and current donors, and ensure that the mission of the Foundation is well publicized throughout Brooklyn and New York City.

Requirements

Proactive, creative and outgoing candidate should have:

  • College degree and at least 3-5 years experience in non-profit or government program management.
  • Working knowledge of Brooklyn’s non-profit community and demographic landscape.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
