Performance Space 122, a not-for-profit, New York City East Village institution founded 30 years ago, is recognized internationally for its presentations of contemporary theatre, dance, music and live art.
Performance Space 122’s External Affairs team is lead by the Artistic Director, and comprised of the Communications & Branding Manager, the Individual Giving & Special Events Manager, the Institutional Giving Manager, the Creative Technology Developer (full time), and the Box Office/Patron Relations Manager (approx 32 hours per week) as well as hourly box office & FOH staff as required. The team is responsible for all earned and unearned revenue strategy and execution.
Performance Space 122 is seeking a Communications & Branding Manager who works within the External Affairs Department to oversee and implement all communications, including the creation and distribution of all marketing materials, with a focus on strengthening brand recognition and patron/partner commitment to the brand. As the organization’s conduit between the Press Representative and the Graphic Designer, the Communications & Branding Manager is expected to purposefully align all points of public interaction to effectively build and disseminate institutional messages.
The position requires an integrated collaborative approach and works closely with the Institutional Giving Manager and Individual Giving & Special Events Manager in areas traditionally located purely in fundraising.
Currently PS122 is in the midst of one of the most radical transitions of its thirty-year history and has begun a fundraising campaign to ensure health and sustainability upon the return to its East Village home that is currently undergoing much needed interior renovations. A robust brand has been identified as a key factor in the future success of PS122. Therefore, the Communications & Branding Manager plays a vital role in strategically positioning PS122 to achieve the goals previously outlined by the organization’s leadership.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Institutional Branding

Under the direction of the Artistic Director, evolve the PS122 brand and align all public points of interaction to the institution’s goals.

Communicate branding strategy to all staff & stakeholders.

Maintain calendar of institutional messaging/activities, including an 18 month strategy for the institutional narrative.

Work with partners, and artists to align their activity with the PS122 brand, and advise on their own outreach strategy as it relates to PS122’s.

To attend weekly staff meetings, department meetings, and necessary project based meetings, as well as participate in the strategic planning process. Coordinate the Marketing Committee at the board level.

Work with the Individual Giving/Special Event and Institutional Giving Managers to create dynamic, collaborative and integrated strategies for developing earned and unearned revenues.
Audience Development/Communications

Encourage audience retention, grow current audience base, and develop new potential audiences with the assistance of a Box Office/Patron Relations Manager.

Generate copy for and manage the creation and distribution of print and digital materials needed to promote all PS122 events, including but not limited to 10-20 presentations (roughly 10 within an international recognized winter festival, COIL), 3 annual special events and 1 annual giving campaign. Materials include, but are not limited to promotional pieces, advertising campaigns, invitations, Artistic Director statements, email newsletters etc.

Draft annual narrative and maintain PS122’s presence in the media with a focus on growing the institutional profile by increasing the number of earned impressions.

Schedule all shoots and maintain photo and video archives of all activities with the assistance of the Creative Technology Developer.

Advocate for the patron needs and provide optimum customer experiences based on data and feedback.

Maintain style guide, PS122 templates and usage rules.
Data/Financial Management

Work with External Affairs Team to ensure data accuracy in OvationTix, Mailchimp, and audience/program tracking documents.

Track progress of all communications including box office revenue, all relevant statistics, data analysis and revise institutional marketing and audience development strategy based on this data.

Track income and expenses responsibly, work with the Managing Director to ensure that programs are delivered within the available resources.

Create the budget for branding and communications within the context of the overall external affairs priorities.
Staffing
-
Manage Box Office Manager, Creative Technology Developer, and interns (as needed).

As needed, hire & manage external staff/consultants including but not limited to Graphic Designer & Press Representative (currently both these roles are contracted)
REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 3 -5 years of experience in related capacity with an emphasis on developing and implementing institutional marketing / branding.

Experience in non-profit arts administration is preferred but not required, solid knowledge of contemporary performing arts practices and performing arts sector is essential.

The successful candidate must be self-directed and can work independently but must also be able to work collaboratively in team situation as a core member of the External Affairs Team.

The successful candidate must demonstrate strong ability in data analysis.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop), Googledocs/Google sites and Wordpress is required. Working knowledge of Ovationtix, Donor Tools & Mailchimp or comparable software is a plus.
