Tibet Fund - Executive Director
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Executive Director (ED) of The Tibet Fund (TF) reports directly to the President and to the Chair of the Board (Chair), and works closely with and under the authority of the Board of Directors (Board) and its committees (Executive, Program, Finance, Development and Governance). The ED manages The Tibet Fund’s day-to-day operations and leads the development and implementation of all aspects of its operations including:
- Visionary leadership and execution of Strategic Plan
- Staff Management
- Board Relations and Public Communications
- Financial Administration
- Donor Development and Fundraising
- Program Development and Oversight
Visionary leadership and execution of Strategic Plan
- Ensure the implementation of TF’s formalized Strategic Plan
- Maintain timely awareness of developments in the Tibetan community and among related organizations to address evolving needs and capitalize on emerging opportunities
- Direct TF’s affairs and operations in a manner that serves the organization’s primary beneficiaries and stakeholders
- Develop a big picture/long-term organizational view and conduct day-to-day operations in the context of this larger vision
Staff Management
- Manage and oversee the day-to-day activities of a staff of seven full-time employees, interns, and volunteers in accordance with typical non-profit business practices
- Ensure appropriate staffing consistent with the organization’s needs and within the constraints of the organization’s physical and financial resources
- Update and maintain appropriate job descriptions for all staff
- Recruit, select, orient and train staff
- Evaluate staff and ensure they are appropriately supported and compensated
- Ensure effective communication and collaboration among staff
Financial Administration (working with TF’s Finance Director)
- Develop annual income and expense budgets, as well as cash flow projections
- Present annual budget to the Treasurer and Board for evaluation and modification as required by the annual budget cycle
- Review financial performance on a regular basis with the Treasurer and Board and take responsibility to ensure the fiscal health of the organization
- Develop a business plan to carry out the Board’s Strategic Plan
Donor development and Fundraising (working with the President and TF’s Development Director)
- Develop fundraising strategies and create annual goals for both government grants and private donors
- Plan and execute special fundraising events, as approved by the Board
- Participate in high-level donor cultivation
- Maintain relationships with funding sources and ensure the preparation of funding proposals
- Oversee and ensure quality of all marketing materials, including Annual Report, brochures, invitations, website, etc.
- Utilize innovative marketing resources, including creative use of database and social media
Program Development and Oversight (working with the President and TF’s Program staff)
- Guide TF’s role in the development and funding of program initiatives, in collaboration with the Central Tibetan Administration and Tibet related NGOs
- Oversee the writing and preparation of grant proposals and other program-related materials
- Establish accountability standards and systems that track the effectiveness and impact of the organization's program activities
- Ensure the development of sustainable programs and services consistent with the needs of the Tibetan community
- Monitor programs and services to ensure consistency with criteria established by the mission and goals of the organization
Board Relations and Public Communications (working with the President)
- Organize Board meetings; develop agendas and support materials
- Work with Board to develop goals and objectives with concrete deliverables for the ED’s work, to be used to evaluate ED performance
- Communicate with Board members to keep them engaged and participating in TF's program and fundraising activities
- Participate in and facilitate Board Committee meetings
Implement Board policy
- Provide summary reports and both statistical and qualitative feedback that will demonstrate the degree to which the Board’s policies are being met
- Keep Board informed of significant issues affecting the development and delivery of programs and services as they arise
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate for this position:
- Is an experienced and visionary professional with international development knowledge and a broad understanding of issues related to refugees, grassroots development and sustainability
- Has a strong commitment to the advancement of disadvantaged peoples and the preservation of traditional cultures
- Is knowledgeable and passionate about the cause of the Tibetan people, the Tibetan diaspora and the needs of Tibetans in Tibet
- Is a person of integrity and stature with proven leadership experience and exemplary nonprofit management skills
- Has a proven ability to run an organization in a transparent, ethical, effective, and efficient manner
- Has excellent written and oral communication skills, including a high comfort level in presenting to potential donors and other business, governmental, and non-governmental leaders
- Has an ability to plan activities and projects, set deadlines and budgets, and reliably adhere to them
- Has an ability to organize, prioritize and focus staff efforts on the achievement of quality results in an efficient, timely and cost-effective manner
- Has the ability to lead, inspire and motivate others to achieve excellence
- Has exceptional relationship building, people building, and team building skills and a track record of building strong, mutually beneficial relationships
- Is adaptable, flexible, and cooperative
- Is self-motivated and works well under pressure
- Is willing to travel and work weekends and evenings, as needed
Desirable Qualifications.
- Related Masters Degree (e.g. International Development, Business Administration, or Not-for-profit management) or equivalent experience
- Experience in managing a not-for-profit organization
- Working knowledge of Tibetan language and experience working for the Tibetan community
