The Museum of the City of New York is looking for a Grants Writer to join its dynamic development team. This position requires the ability to write grant applications, reports, and correspondence to a variety of foundations, government, and corporate funders. Preferred candidates are self-starters with prior work experience at cultural institutions and two years of experience in writing proposals.
The Museum raises approximately $17 million annually from individuals and institutions and through special events. The Grants Writer reports to the Grants Manager and works collaboratively with other development staff in the production, submission, and tracking of grant proposals and reports to foundations, government agencies, and corporations.
Excellent writing and organizational skills are required, as the Associate must be able to both create quality work products and meet all deadlines for their completion.
Responsibilities and Duties:
I. Proposal Writing

Writes project-specific and general support grant proposals and applications; letters of inquiry; and progress reports and other correspondence to prospective and renewing foundations, corporations, and government agencies.

Gathers and prepares all materials to accompany grant requests (financial data, bios, required forms, etc.)

Prepares weekly tracking reports of submitted funding requests
II. Proposal Stewardship

Produces acknowledgment and thank you letters

Tracks submitted proposals (i.e. confirms receipt of mailings and online applications, etc.)

Ensures grant compliance through the timely submission of interim and final reports

Candidate Requirements:
-
Ability to produce writing that meets the Museum’s stylistic requirements and concisely conveys a wide variety of data

Excellent computer skills, including MS Office, internet and fundraising software. Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge is a plus.

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills and the ability to plan, prioritize and coordinate multiple projects/deadlines

Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information

Knowledge of New York’s philanthropic community

A track record of producing successful grant applications

Strong interests in history and/or culture

Education and Experience
-
Bachelor’s degree required.

Three or more years of grant writing experience, preferably in a museum, educational or cultural institution.

Long tenure at one or more institutions is desirable.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience
