Director of Development
Publicolor
New York,
New York
Publicolor - Director of Development
Publicolor was founded in 1996 as a way to address two of the root causes of poverty: the under-education of students and their lack of preparedness for the workforce. The inspiration of Ruth Lande Shuman, Publicolor is a unique New York City-based nonprofit organization that sponsors design-based programs for at-risk youth and brings vibrant color to institutional public spaces. Publicolor’s highly creative program helps transition students from being at risk of dropping out of school to becoming productive members of society.
Publicolor engages underserved students, age 12-21, in their education through a continuum of design-based programs and academic support that counter the dropout rate. Programs include the recruitment of disadvantaged students to paint the walls of their schools and the awarding of financial rewards to some for their work. Publicolor engages adult volunteers who participate in the students' painting activities and/or provide life-skills and career exposure workshops, college counseling, summer job placement, tutoring and mentoring.
The Position:
With an annual budget of $3 million, Publicolor has brought its programs to more than 147 school buildings and 178 community sites, with demand on a steep rise. Unless it increases capacity and resources, Publicolor will not be able to meet this demand. Publicolor now seeks a strong Director of Development (DoD) to work in close collaboration with its Founder and President, Ruth Lande Shuman, to grow the organization while also protecting and ensuring its existing culture of collaboration. This highly intelligent self-starter will share Publicolor’s vision and core mission and relish the challenge of taking a medium-sized organization to the next step. This position reports directly to the Founder/President.
The DoD will be expected to cooperate with the President to develop a successful fundraising strategy that takes advantage of Publicolor’s positive image. She or he will manage Board relations and coordinate all board meetings. The DoD will set goals and priorities, supervise special events, write or oversee grant applications, and lead the development team to plan a comprehensive individual giving program including prospect research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. She or he will be a highly organized manager who creates and utilizes work plans to define, track and deliver outcomes. In addition, he or she will be creative, a hands-on manager, a strategic thinker and planner, a problem solver and able to respond to crises and opportunities quickly and effectively.

- Work closely with the Founder/President and the Board of Directors to grow Publicolor’s development program
- Plan and direct fundraising activities, including an individual giving program, to secure funding for Publicolor’s priorities

- Support all staff to ensure effective teamwork within and productive relationships with Publicolor’s external partners
- Supervise the planning and monitoring of the budget to maximize resources using best practices in the field
Experience and Qualifications
- Minimum of eight years of professional fundraising experience
- Significant accomplishments in working with a team to establish short- and long-term goals for fundraising, identifying grant sources, and developing funding projects
- Hands-on expertise in raising funds through events, public and private grants, and major gifts.
- Demonstrated ability to oversee operational functions such as program and staff development, and human resources
- Intellectual curiosity about the landscape of youth development and the issues affecting at-risk youth, and a commitment to the organization’s mission
