Liberty in North Korea - Director of Finance

Based in Los Angeles, CA, Liberty in North Korea (LiNK) is the only full-time grassroots organization in North America devoted to the North Korean human rights and humanitarian crises. The organization is committed to what many consider to be the most urgent human rights and humanitarian crisis today. LiNK provides protection and aid to North Korean refugees hiding in China and, utilizing a modern-day underground railroad through Southeast Asia, rescues refugees and helps them to reach freedom. LiNK’s global grassroots movement works to redefine public perception on North Korea, shifting attention away from the politics and onto the people, and provides a way for concerned citizens to come alongside the North Korean people and help bring about positive change. LiNK also works to develop people-focused strategies that will have the potential to promote change inside North Korea in the long term.

Position Summary

The Director of Finance is one of the most important roles at LiNK, ensuring our success and sustainability by contributing to the organization’s mission, business goals and vision. This position is responsible for enhancing the organization’s financial, accounting, auditing, budgeting, and payroll functions as well as the designing and implementation of internal operational structures to sustain and grow the organization. This position will report to the President/CEO. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned, as required.

Core Responsibilities

  • Responsible to ensure that the finances of the organization are in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible to establish systems for financial controls and create accurate and timely financial reports that allow for strategic planning to enhance the organization’s sustainability and growth.
  • Monitor and manage accounting systems that track revenue, expenses and budget variances.
  • Generate regular financial statements for LiNK’s Executive Leadership Team as well as the Governing Board of Directors.
  • Customize financial statements and necessary reporting.
  • Responsible for short term and long range planning and budget development to support strategic business plans and goals.
  • Responsible for helping to oversee day-to-day operations in office.
  • Work with the Executive Leadership Team to develop and implement plans for the operational infrastructure of systems, processes and personnel design to ensure organizational effectiveness and impact.
  • Oversee facilities and general operational management business planning activities.
  • Maximize organizational resources.

  • Communication. Demonstrates excellent communication skills both verbal and written. Possesses the ability to actively listen, encourage constructive dialogue as well as prepare for professional presentations and public speaking.
  • Teamwork. LiNK’s office culture is intentionally collaborative and relies on working together as a team. This position would demonstrate a high priority of cooperation and collaboration with others in the office.
  • Analysis. Demonstrates keen analytical ability characterized by identifying, assimilating and comprehending the critical elements of various situations while extracting and interpreting implications of course of action.

Minimum Requirement and Qualifications

  • Embody core proficiencies.
  • Ability to work effectively with conflicting demands, changing and competing priorities within a fast paced work environment.
  • Demonstrated financial and operational leadership and proficiency in areas of structure, processes, protocols, systems, financial management and oversight.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the areas of budget development/management, projections, financial analysis and reporting requirements.
  • Bring inspiration, commitment and passion to the team.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (from an accredited institution) in the field of business, accounting, organizational development, or other related fields.
  • Masters degree (from an accredited institution) in a related field, preferred.


AND

  • Minimum 3 years of accounting experience in non-profit or private sector.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a managerial or leadership capacity.
