Goddard Riverside Community Center - Trainer, Counselor
The Options Institute, a program at Goddard Riverside Community Center, a well-established social service agency on the Upper West Side of Manhattan seeks a trainer-counselor. Join our team to provide on-going college access training for professionals at community based organizations, as well as to staff throughout NYC Department of Education over the next three years.
Knowledgeable, approachable counselors are critical to helping low-income, first generation to college youth get into and succeed in postsecondary education. If you are passionate about helping young people get to and through college and want to share your knowledge, please consider joining us.
Reporting to the Director of Training, the trainer-counselor will be responsible to facilitate workshops for college advisor professionals on topics ranging from good fit colleges to financial aid to transition to college. The trainer-counselor will also manage a small educational counseling caseload of college bound students.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Facilitate full day and half day workshops for HS guidance counselors, CBO college advisors, volunteers and students
- Prepare and deliver presentations at NYS and national conferences
- Help develop the curriculum and materials to support the workshops

Participate in data review meetings to assess and improve training outcomes

Set-up and break-down of workshops. Assist with materials preparation as necessary

Conduct intensive one-on-one college counseling with teens and adults

Advocate for students with colleges and other institutions
Requirements:
-
Bachelor’s degree
-
4 or more years recent experience counseling college applicants strongly preferred Experience working with low income or underrepresented populations a plus

Familiarity with college admissions and financial aid application processes

Knowledge of adult learning theory

Strong facilitation skills; ability to present in front of large groups; prior training experience a plus

Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Demonstrated ability to work on a team and be flexible

Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Work Environment: Office
Days/Hours: Full-time (35 hrs/week). Mon-Fri 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; Occasional weekend/evening hours
