Center for Strategic Community Innovation - Deputy Director

Launched in 2009, the Center for Strategic Community Innovation (CSCi) is a non-profit intermediary that builds the capacity of communities, schools, human service systems, and families to create the necessary conditions for health, education, and prosperity, thereby achieving a more equitable and just society. CSCi identifies, tests and applies evidence-based methods at the intersection of service systems, including health, social services, juvenile justice, public education, and community development in identified communities. CSCi provides capacity-building services that support CBOs, school districts and other public agencies in low-income Bay Area communities to achieve positive outcomes for children, families, and whole neighborhoods.

Position

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Deputy Director will have both internal and external responsibilities ranging from organizational development (business planning, fund development, marketing and public relations) to administration (staff supervision and development, funder reporting), and program development, management and provision (client consultation/facilitation, training, technical assistance, and tool development). The DD ensures that all project guidelines are followed and that all final work products are of a high quality, and packaged in a correct and timely manner for delivery to clients, funders and other parties.

The Deputy Director will partner closely with the ED and the Associate Director (AD) to chart CSCi’s future growth and strategic response to an ever-increasing demand for the organization’s services.

Qualifications

Qualifications for this position include:

  • 7+ years in a senior-level position at a nonprofit organization or school district
  • An advanced degree (PhD or Masters or an equivalent combination of education and experience) in an area of work related to Full Service Community Schools (education, social work, health)
  • Ability to balance high level systems thinking with attention to detailKnowledge, expertise and experience in the field of Full Service Community Schools
  • Experience coordinating and/or participating in cross-sector community initiative(s)
  • Familiarity with urban education, school reform, and programs serving “at risk” students
  • Demonstrated familiarity with school districts, schools, cities, counties, and community based organizations; and ability to work with community, school district, city and county leaders
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including collaborative leadership and joint problem solving
  • Demonstrated experience in project management
  • Experience creating and sustaining professional learning communities
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to take initiative and work effectively both independently and in a team
  • Ability to advocate for CSCi’s needs in a constructive way
  • Flexibility and a good problem solver and strategist with the ability to overcome barriers
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and sustain professional relations
  • Professional demeanor and attitude
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and guide staff and volunteersExperienced in public speaking, planning, and facilitation
  • Experienced in development and implementation of training for adults
  • Experienced in working with data
  • Approaches challenging tasks with grace and humor
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Computer literacy with MS Office Suite
  • A valid California driver’s license and access to a properly insured vehicle for use on the job
  • Physical Requirements
    • Eye/hand coordination, vision and hearing adequate to perform duties outlined in the job description
    • Ability to move about in offices and client site locations
    • Be able to bend stretch, sit for lengthy periods of time, and lift objects up to 40 pounds

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications for this position include:

  • Cultural and/or language capacities that enhance CSCi’s work in diverse communities
  • Significant prior experience with Full Service Community Schools
  • Significant prior experience working with policy and management leadership of public, nonprofit and philanthropic organizations
  • Dynamic personality that helps galvanize individuals and groups into concerted action
  • Experience in organizational development and/or organizational change leadership

Responsibilities

The job duties for this position are are follows, many of which may be conducted in concert with the Executive Director and the Associate Director:

Organizational and Fund Development

  • Provide visionary leadership to expand and develop CSCi as a preeminent nonprofit
  • Develop and implement business plans and timelines
  • Relationship management for partners, clients and funders at the district, regional, state and national levels
  • Participate in marketing efforts and the generation of new business and ongoing funding through grant writing, RFP responses, creative fundraising, and other means

Administration

  • Staff supervision, coaching and developmentResponsible for creation of annual reports for funders
  • Follow CSCi’s protocols regarding proprietary and intellectual property
  • Use discretion to contain expenses

Program Development, Management and Provision

  • Design and plan program elements, including: planning, training, technical assistance, and consultation work
  • Lead the implementation of program elements, including: tool development, planning, meeting facilitation, training, technical assistance, and consultation work
  • Implement multi-year projects in a collaborative environment
  • Keep abreast of the body of knowledge and best practices related to the Community Schools movement and related services to be able to provide effective technical assistance and consultation and collaboration with others
  • Direct Programming with Districts and Collaborative Groups, including but not limited to:
    • Facilitate collaborative planning process
    • Guide data collection activities including surveys, interviews, observations, focus groups, etc.
    • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses as needed and appropriate
    • Prepare clear presentations and well written materials for publication and other purposes

General Duties

  • Work flexibly and responsively on a diverse body of work
  • Assist and support colleagues to produce high quality work

Maintain professional conduct with clients and colleagues

The Deputy Director is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Industrial Wage and Hour Code and, as such, works until the job is completed.

Compensation and Benefits: $65,000-$80,000. Full benefits package (includes: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability, flexible spending account, 401K; plus: 20 vacation, 10 holiday, 12 sick, and 4 personal days annually.
