Stewardship Council - Director of Finance
Primary Purpose of Position
Oversee all financial planning and management activities for the Stewardship Council. Work with the Land Conservation and Youth Investment program directors to oversee financial distributions related to grantmaking. Oversee the Stewardship Council’s financial investments. Manage various financial planning, contracting, and special projects as requested. Work closely with Executive Director, Treasurer, and Program Directors to develop policies and procedures to support the organization’s mission and values. Coordinate support from external accountants, auditors, and investment managers.
Position Responsibilities

Provide accounting and financial management expertise and oversight, including:
-
Supervise Accounting Assistant in all financial matters
-
Oversee accounts payable and receivable
-
Oversee all employee compensation; provide support to the Executive Director in addressing compensation issues
-
Oversee the preparation of monthly financial reports
-
Maintain and enforce appropriate financial controls for the organization
-
Coordinate relationships and support from accounting and banking partners
-
Lead annual financial audits and tax return preparation
-
Manage annual budget planning and forecasting processes
-
Lead negotiations and management of the organization’s insurance policies
-
Ensure appropriate regulatory compliance with state and federal guidelines for
Private Foundations
Provide financial management and support for the grantmaking process
-
Perform financial due diligence on potential grantees
-
Coordinate and manage grantee audit procedures with external audit firm
-
Oversee grantee payment process
-
Work with Executive Director, staff and consultants to determine appropriate level of
annual grantmaking
Provide financial expertise to the Board of Directors

Manage operations of the Fiduciary Committee
-
Coordinate with Executive Director, Treasurer and Program Directors to support board and committee financial analysis needs; manage external consultants providing related support,
as requested

Work with Executive Director, Program Directors and Board to create and revise policies to support the organization’s mission and values

Provide reports, updates and presentations at meeting of the Board of Directors
Provide support for organizational strategic planning

Provide strategic planning leadership to ensure that the organization’s programs and departments are supported by the necessary resources

Contribute financial expertise in the planning of new program areas and
operational structures

Oversee the Stewardship Council’s financial investments
-
Work with Executive Director, board and financial advisors to determine appropriate investment policies for the organization’s investment management

Work with the Stewardship Council’s investment managers to ensure proper compliance with the Council’s investment policy
-
Coordinate with investment managers to ensure adequate cash reserves for the
Council’s operations
Oversee the Stewardship Council’s Contracting process

Work with the Executive Director and program directors to determine annual consultant needs and budgets
-
Coordinate contract preparation with program directors
-
Track annual consultant expenditures to budget and coordinate contract renewals with program directors
Requirements
-
At least 5 years minimum professional experience in finance and/or accounting
-
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required; MBA or CPA desirable
-
Demonstrated experience with nonprofit accounting principles
-
Excellent oral and written communication skills
-
Advanced skills in all of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access), as well as accounting systems (Quickbooks and Intacct preferred)
-
Demonstrated ability to work in a small team environment, and with a broad range of individuals and organizations with diverse interests
-
Experience in managing an accounting staff desirable
