Reports to: Assistant Director, Chapter Operations
Say Yes to Education, Inc. (SYTE) is a national, non-profit education foundation committed to dramatically increasing high school and college graduation rates for our nation's inner-city youth. Say Yes provides comprehensive supports, including the promise of a full college or vocational education, aligned with what research indicates is needed to enable every child in the program to achieve his or her potential. The Say Yes promise and supports begin when a child enters kindergarten and continue through high school and beyond. The New York City chapter of SYTE works with a cohort of 384 students and their families and offers a range of services including Saturday and Summer programming with access to tutoring, enrichment opportunities, and career exploration, day school academic and advisory support; family outreach and support; student and family social services, parent and sibling financial assistance for postsecondary education; and family access to free legal services.
Position Summary:
The Scholarship Coordinator supports implementation of the SYTE Family Scholarship Program and coordinates scholarship support activities and programs, including but not limited to assessing families’ post-secondary scholarship needs, counseling families, processing scholarship forms, and collaborating with the Student Development & Support Services to support the Say Yes students and families holistically for the purpose of high school completion and post-secondary success.
Essential Functions/Job Responsibilities:
- Identify families’ post-secondary needs and develop and/or connect the families with the appropriate resources, services, and support programs, i.e. tutoring networks, academic assistance programs at colleges, etc. (70%)
- Process family scholarship applications and support documents according to chapter scholarship policy.
- Counseling families in college selection and college and financial aid applications; educational advising to encourage success in post-secondary educational programs.
- Coordinate and participate in applicant review meetings with the Family Scholarship Committee; follow up with scholarship applicants.
- Liaison between Say Yes and post-secondary institutions; establish and maintain relationships with colleges and vocational programs and have an understanding of their program criteria for admission in order to provide academic support and guidance to students and family members.
- Work closely with college advisors and educational consultants to increase the academic achievement of family members, i.e. SAT preparation, essay preparation, etc.
- Develop and implement a family scholarship support group for the purpose of strengthening a college going culture across the scholarship recipients and sharing college readiness and college success strategies.
- Participate in the development of policy, process, and procedure updates regarding family scholarships and develop related documents as needed.
- Participate in the facilitation of meetings and workshops that focus on post-secondary education and success.
- Maintain family education data and records.
- Prepare scholarship budget and monitor expenses.
- Participate in the development and implementation of career and college readiness programs, services, activities, and events for Say Yes students in middle school and high school that will enhance their opportunity for successfully completing school and admission to high school and post-secondary institutions, i.e. college knowledge activities, college visits. (25%)
- Participate in SYTE meetings and professional development (5%)
- Perform additional duties as needed which may require working evenings and weekends.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, or related field
- 3 years experience providing post-secondary academic counseling and guidance
- Proficient in Spanish, both spoken and written.
- Experience facilitating post-secondary education workshops
- Knowledge of and access to post-secondary education service providers and organizations
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Ability to analyze and problem solve to effectively meet the needs of Say Yes to Education students and family members
- Demonstrated sensitivity to a diverse student and family population
- Exceptional written, organizational, and time management skills
- Must be a team player who enjoys working in a highly collaborative environment
- Ability to work Saturday and some evenings
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in education, social work, or related field
- 5 years experience providing post-secondary academic counseling and guidance and facilitating post-secondary education workshops
- Knowledge of statistical software, i.e. SPSS
