Say Yes to Education, Inc. (SYTE) is a national, non-profit education foundation committed to dramatically increasing high school and college graduation rates for our nation's inner-city youth. Say Yes provides comprehensive supports, including the promise of a full college or vocational education, aligned with what research indicates is needed to enable every child in the program to achieve his or her potential. The Say Yes promise and supports begin when a child enters kindergarten and continue through high school and beyond. The New York City chapter of SYTE works with a cohort of 384 students and their families and offers a range of services including Saturday and Summer programming with access to tutoring, enrichment opportunities, and career exploration, day school academic and advisory support; family outreach and support; student and family social services, parent and sibling financial assistance for postsecondary education; and family access to free legal services.

Position Summary:
The Assistant Director, Academic Services & Programs is a key staff member of Say Yes to Education who works closely with the Chapter Director and the Student Development & Support Services Team to 1) assess and monitor Say Yes students’ academic needs and performance; (2) develop and implement strategic academic interventions and initiatives that are aligned with students’ academic needs; 3) design, develop, and implement the core academic services program for SYTE day school, after school, drop in centers, Saturday, and Summer Programs; and 4) providing workshops for parents on ways to support students’ academic progress.

The ideal candidate will have a commitment to the mission of Say Yes to prepare students with the knowledge and skills to be successful in college and their careers as well as a firm belief in the ability of all students to achieve at a high level. The ideal candidate will have professional experience working in New York City public and/or private high schools; an understanding of the New York State Common Core learning standards, curriculum and state assessments; experience with developing differentiated high school preparatory programs that address multiple areas of student need, interest, and talent in academics and the arts. The successful candidate has experience in program design and project management, supervising professional staff, achieving quality program outcomes, and enjoys working in a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.

Essential Functions/Job Responsibilities:

The main responsibilities of the Assistant Director, Academic Services & Programs include but are not limited to the following:

  • Design, develop, and oversee the implementation of the Chapter’s core academic services program for Say Yes students including interventions, support, and enrichment initiatives in day school, after school, drop-in centers, Saturday and summer programs. (50%)
  • Oversee the implementation of academic services to ensure alignment with Say Yes indicators in academics, the arts, and adolescent issues e.g. leadership development, high engagement elective offerings, product based activities, sports and arts talent development, social and recreational activities, team building activities, cultural enrichment activities, local and regional trips, mentoring and volunteer opportunities, etc.
  • Coordinate and monitor day school and after school academic interventions and support services across the SYTE schools, including but not limited to setting procedures for working with students and families and creating all necessary documentation and forms.
  • Oversee the recruitment and hiring of interim staff and/or consultants for the after school, Saturday, summer, and drop-in center programs.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate the SYTE academic support instructors.
  • Supervise and support professional staff implementing SYTE program activities to assure achievement of SYTE goals, quality student and program outcomes, and alignment of activities to NYC high school educational programs.
  • Collaborate with the Chapter Director, the Managing Director of Student Development and Support Services, and key staff to develop and coordinate annual evaluations of SYTE after school, Saturday, summer, and drop-in center programs to monitor effectiveness and quality of programming and to identify areas for modification and change based on feedback from students, staff, parents, and high school partners.
  • In collaboration with the Managing Director, Student Development and Support Services establish protocols and procedures for the Student Development and Support Services team for the timely collection of student academic performance data, and collaborate with the Chapter’s data management team to ensure effective maintenance of student academic records in the SYTE data management system. (20%)
  • Collaborate with the Chapter Director, the Managing Director, Student Development and Support Services, and key staff to utilize the SYTE data management system to measure and monitor student academic achievement and evidence of progress; to demonstrate how SYTE programs are addressing students’ needs and supporting progress; and to generate individual student and chapter-wide reports as needed.
  • Conference on a weekly basis and collaborate with the Student Development & Support Services Team to analyze student data; to identify student and family needs; provide input on student academic issues, including but not limited to the design of student academic growth plans; and to ensure coordination and continuity between school supports and after school, Saturday, summer, and drop-in center programs, share best practices, and to respond to changes in the educational and social-emotional field. (10%)
  • Meet regularly with the Chapter Director, Managing Director of Student Development & Support Services, and the Director of College Admissions & College Success to share information about students’ needs and performance and to ensure alignment with services provided by the Student Development & Support Services Team and the college admissions team. (10%)
  • Conduct and/or facilitate workshops for parents on ways to support academic progress at home. (5%)
  • Participate in Say Yes meetings and professional development. (3%)
  • In collaboration with the Managing Director, Student Development and Support Services, assist the Chapter Director in budget preparation and monitoring expenses. (2%)
  • Communicate effectively and meet regularly with the SYTE Chapter Director
  • Perform additional duties as needed which may require working evenings and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Education
  • Minimum of 5 years classroom high school teaching experience, preferably in New York City public schools
  • Experience working with educational after-school, Saturday, and/or summer programs with adolescents
  • Innovative self-starter who has demonstrated an ability to create highly engaging programs based on population needs
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of data to assess student academic needs and to design and implement academic interventions and other support and enrichment initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and to plan strategically with colleagues in order to meet annual organization and chapter goals.
  • Experience planning budgets and monitoring program expenses
  • Experience supervising and evaluating education staff and programs
  • Knowledge of NYC high schools and the services needed to prepare students for admission to college.
  • Knowledge of educational support and enrichment programs in the arts, academics, and adolescent issues
  • Ability to work Saturday and some evenings
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written, oral communication, organizational, and time management skills
  • Strong organizational and planning skills, detail oriented
  • Proficient in MS Office, email, and internet
  • Demonstrated experience with and sensitivity to a diverse population of students and their families

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in Spanish
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain partnerships with external organizations
  • Demonstrated initiative in problem solving
  • Ability to communicate effectively in settings with multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience implementing a strengths based approach to problem solving
  • Team player who enjoys working in a highly collaborative environment (able to take initiative and perform in a fast paced, fluid environment)
