About the Position
This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President.
San José State University (SJSU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for University Advancement. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, SJSU educates students to compete in, and contribute to, today’s complex global economy. A member of the 23-campus 400,000-student California State University system, SJSU is one of the 200 top research universities in the nation.
SJSU grants bachelor’s and master’s degrees to over 30,000 students in seven Colleges: Applied Sciences & Arts, Business, Education, Engineering, Humanities & the Arts, Science, and Social Sciences. The SJSU community, which consists of more than 700 tenure/tenure track faculty and 1,400 staff, is very diverse and committed to enriching the lives of its students; transmitting knowledge along with the necessary skills for applying it in the service of our society; and expanding the base of knowledge through research and scholarship.
The Vice President for University Advancement is a member of President Mohammed H. Qayoumi’s cabinet and is CEO of the Tower Foundation, SJSU’s non-profit organization dedicated to philanthropy. With a total budget of approximately $7.1 million, the vice president plans and implements initiatives in support of the university’s mission and provides strategic vision for the following units: Development, Public Affairs, Marketing and Communications, Advancement Operations, Alumni Relations and the Tower Foundation. In conjunction with the President, the Vice President acts as a representative and ambassador to SJSU’s constituents to promote positive relationships and strong partnerships.
Education and Experience
The successful candidate will have ten years or more of progressive management and leadership experience in higher education advancement; a proven track record in all aspects of fundraising, including major donor cultivation and executing a major capital campaign; a strong commitment to SJSU’s mission and values; excellent interpersonal and communications skills; and a collaborative, collegial, transparent management style. A bachelor’s degree is required, with the strong preference for an advanced degree. Knowledge of the California State University or other public university systems is preferred but not required.
