REPORTS TO: Executive Director
RESPONSIBLE FOR: up to 2 direct fundraising posts – to be recruited by the Director
BACKGROUND
The White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood ® (www.whiteribbonalliance.org) is an advocacy alliance working towards a world where the right of all women to be safe and healthy before, during and after childbirth is upheld. WRA works with members around the world and National Alliances in 15 countries.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
As Director of Strategic Fundraising you will be responsible for coordinating all fundraising activity conducted on behalf of the WRA. This is a new position in a rapidly growing, ambitious international Alliance. As a member of the Management Team you will be expected to contribute to the development of the future strategy and organizational development of the WRA. You will be expected to work closely with the President, Executive Director, Communications Director, Finance Director, key consultants, and others to deliver your role. Principal responsibilities include:

To maximize the generation of funds for the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood (WRA), achieving income generation targets in line with organizational planning;

To maximize income from a range of different sources including major donors, individual giving campaigns, direct marketing, trust fundraising, corporate fundraising, Governments and Foundations.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Fundraising
-
To manage all the fundraising activities of the organization;
-
To develop a fundraising strategy for the future that will deliver in line with organizational planning;
-
To achieve the WRA’s annual fundraising income targets in line with organizational planning;
-
To develop and manage appropriate activities to expand the organization’s individual donor-base, exploring and implementing methods to achieve this;
-
To develop a major donor fundraising program;
-
To develop and manage relationships with existing and new donors in order to maximize fundraising potential and supporter retention;
-
To identify fundraising opportunities in line with organizational planning, preparing applications to charitable trusts, foundations, grant making bodies and companies
-
To represent the WRA to appropriate donors, funders and networks to secure ongoing and new support;
-
To oversee the organization of special fundraising events;
-
To keep up to date and comply with current fundraising legislation and standards;

To work collaboratively with other areas of the organization to achieve the WRA’s overall strategic objectives;

To develop a relationship management database to ensure efficient and effective administrative systems for fundraising;
-
To prepare regular management information reports in respect of all aspects of the organization’s fundraising activity, including performance against income generation targets, for other senior managers, the Executive Director and the Board;

To content manage the fundraising section of the website and advise on ways to use the website to support wider fundraising initiatives;
-
To coordinate with communications, campaigns and program staff to develop compelling fundraising collateral, key messages, and impact statements;

To research, test and, where appropriate, develop new fundraising ideas and opportunities for income generation.

Offer a basic level of advice, ideas and best practice on fundraising to National Alliance staff.
Budget and line management

To manage the fundraising budget, which includes planning, phasing and forecasting in line with the organization’s financial procedures;

To line manage, develop and motivate other members of the fundraising team as they may be appointed, whether they are employees, consultants or interns;
-
To lead the recruitment of new members of the fundraising team, whether employees, consultants or interns, ensuring that appointments reflect the priorities set out in the organizational and fundraising strategies.
General

To contribute to the strategic development and operational running of the organization with the Executive Director and other members of the Management Team;

Represent the WRA at external meetings, where appropriate.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES (E = Essential; D = Desired)
We will recruit in accordance with demonstrable experience of the following:

A commitment to the values, mission and principles of the WRA; (E)

Significant fundraising experience, including at least three years in a senior fundraising role; (E)

Direct experience in at least three of the following areas: foundation fundraising; major donors; individual giving campaigns; corporate fundraising; Government fundraising; (E)

Experience of developing and implementing a fundraising strategy; (E)

Track record of delivering significant income growth and achieving income generation targets across a number of different fundraising areas; (E)
-
Well-developed understanding of the fundraising legal framework and best practice; (E)
-
Successful track record of bid writing for approaches to grant making trusts, corporate and statutory sources of funding; (E)

Direct experience of building and maintaining successful relationships with major donors and key corporate supporters; (E)

Experience of managing budgets, including planning, forecasting and analysing performance; (E)

Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation (E)

Experience of managing people and developing a team, including consultants and interns; (D)

IT skills, including Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint and databases; (D)

Experience with international fundraising and principles; (D)

Evidence of continuing professional development in the area of fundraising; (D)

Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills; (D)

An understanding of advocacy, maternal health and human rights issues. (D)
