Community Resources for Science - Project Coordinator, Science Education Outreach
Organization: Community Resources for Science (CRS) is a nonprofit organization based in Berkeley that provides science professional development and support services to educators in Alameda County. Our mission is to build a community of educators dedicated to getting young students excited about learning through science. Our office in North Berkeley provides a home base for a creative and energetic team of staff and consultants who provide science resource information and customized support for teachers, education consulting services, and a large scientist-volunteer program.
Responsibilities: Coordinate the recruitment, preparation, and placement of scientist volunteers for an in-class science education program, Bay Area Scientists in Schools. Project coordinator will work with private industry employers to arrange volunteer opportunities for employees in science-related workplaces. Project Coordinator will work with the BASIS Program Manager to accomplish recruitment, preparation, and placement of volunteers in local elementary (and possibly middle) schools. Coordinator will also reach out to new prospective employer partners and make presentations to businesses regarding employee volunteer participation. Project coordinator will also reach out to schools regarding BASIS.
Specific deliverables may include:
- Outreach and Volunteer Recruitment at private industry employers with whom CRS has an established relationship.
- Outreach to new private industry employers regarding establishing employee education outreach volunteer opportunities in partnership with CRS.
- Assist with lesson development, obtaining materials and assembling lesson kits, and training of new volunteers.
- Ongoing coordination of placement of volunteers in classrooms to deliver interactive science lessons, including communication with member teachers and current volunteers to schedule visits and distribute associated logistical information.
- Follow up, monitoring of post-placement evaluations; providing ongoing support and feedback to volunteers.
- Program documentation and evaluation, including photo and video documentation
- Outreach visits to local teachers/schools to present information about CRS services and programs.
- Assist with Volunteer Appreciation and education outreach events.
Qualifications
- Experience and/or training regarding elementary science content and effective science teaching
- Project coordination experience
- Previous volunteer recruitment and management experience or experience with volunteer management best practices
- Strong oral communication skills, including facility in training professionals
- Strong written skills needed for developing marketing materials, training materials, and other communications with volunteers, teachers, and our private industry employer partners.
- Ability to work independently and be self-directed
- Ability to lift 20 lbs.
Preferred:
- Work experience in the science research, pharmaceutical, or biotech industry.
- Experience in marketing, outside sales, development or related areas with demonstrated effectiveness in outreach and partner relationship building.
- Experience with Salesforce.com platform
Schedule, Hours, and Salary: This is a part-time, fixed-term, contract position for 15-20 hours per week from August 2012 – July 2013, with possibility of extension. Work is conducted during the standard work week. Contract rate $15-$18 per hour, DOE. CRS is an equal opportunity organization.
Job requires ability to travel to local workplaces and school sites. Access to car preferred.
