YMCA of Metro Chicago - Vice President of Membership Development

The Vice President of Membership Development is responsible for providing strategic internal consulting and expertise on Association-wide membership and operational activities. The incumbent stewards the YMCA of Metro Chicago strategic plan for membership development aimed at shaping the overall service delivery systems, membership program quality, marketing member services, and fiscal management initiatives.

The Vice President of Membership Development works collaboratively with other senior leaders to ensure the execution of the Association membership strategy and implementation of internal and external membership programs; provides supervision of designated staff, and enhances the Association’s delivery and capacity as a mission-driven organization in order to achieve objectives.

Scope and Responsibilites:

  • Communicates a clear vision for the mission and goals of the YMCA which inspires and engages internal constituents and the external community;
  • Serves as a member of the Association Leadership Team and other assigned committees as needed and collaborates with both in the development of center membership programs and monitors center plans accordingly;
  • Champions and integrates character development and the four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all aspects of membership and programs;
  • Counsels and supports branch executives to achieve targets in the long range plan;
  • Develops, manages, and monitors the department budget and meets or exceeds budgeted targets, including membership revenue through growth and retention of members;
  • Responsible for increasing community collaborations relating to programs and initiatives for the Association and for providing coaching, mentoring, and consultation with all Association centers on their related initiatives. Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with community agencies and other organizations is an essential part of this position;
  • Develops and leads the planning and implementation of member services, involvement and retention, and related marketing efforts; includes program growth, safety monitoring and quality improvement;
  • Prepares and maintains statistical, analytical, and narrative reports and records related to department and Association-wide programs as required. Analyzes and defines trends and interpret their implications for the YMCA;
  • Develops opportunities and resources to meet staff training needs; provides guidance/coaching to center staff based on strategic plan goals. Oversees the implementation of the Association’s strategic plans as it pertains to membership and membership programs and monitors achievement of objectives and exercises appropriate action to ensure objectives are met;
  • Directs Staff Meetings to ensure smooth operations, program innovation and communication for the Association. Serves as key liaison between the centers and corporate department heads to ensure all levels of the Association are operating in concert and all initiatives are fully integrated;
  • Ensures all program operations are consistent with Association procedures, including purchasing, safety and risk management, accounting, information technology and personnel systems;
  • Develops and maintains contacts in the community with business and civic leaders, interpreting the work of the YMCA and soliciting and gaining their interest and support.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required. A master’s degree is preferred. A Organizational Leader or equivalent and a minimum of 7-10 years' experience managing a YMCA branch and/or YMCA local association senior management position is required;
  • A high degree of skill in YMCA program development and operations, fiscal management, board and volunteer development, membership growth and retention, staff development, community development and collaboration;
  • Flexibility and sensitivity to individual community and local association market differences and must be able to engender acceptance in a highly diverse environment;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work within the culture while being able to think strategically and creatively to move the YMCA forward in its mission;
  • Command of research findings and best practices as relates to systems thinking, asset development, human development, organizational change processes, behavior modification, exercise science, information technology and applied research;
  • Strong project management skills, analytical skills, creativity and resourcefulness in formulating a unique approach to increase YMCA brand awareness and appreciation;
  • Requires the ability to track, analyze and design short and long-term multi-market strategies and key programs that can be executed in the marketplace in collaboration with peers, partners, volunteers and local associations;
  • Must be able to utilize high level communication, persuasion and strategic thoughts to help others understand internal and external positions and promote new ideas in an open environment;
  • Commitment to character development values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
